My family were Ulstermen; the family currently seems to be situated heavily in Belfast, Co.Antrium and Armagh. With the name McCollum I had always assumed that they were followers of Collum Cille, but I could be wrong. I do know that McCollum's are considered one of the first clans to appear to Scotland as well, so I assume that they came over with the Kingdom of Dal Raidth(sp?).

Other than that I don't know to much. There doesn't seem to have been that many famous ones of us. When I told my Father I laughed and said "we most likely were just hired warriors for the higher Kings". "nah", my Dad replied, "knowing us, we did it for free!!"

Ironically most McCollums I have meet from other parts of the US, Canada and Ireland do seem to look similiar and have a certain....shared disposition ("I'm right, your wrong, the WORLD is wrong so it better get the hell out of my way and leave me alone" - seems to be a pretty good way to describe it)

Of course, when I play CK prior to 1066 a McCollum MIGHT have to take over a part of Ulster; maybe the Ui'Neil shall grant it to us :)

Heh. The farthest back I've been able to trace my family (in any direction) was the generation that left Europe. But then, my direct-male-line dates back to Massachusetts in the 1630s, so I guess that's a lot better than most people can do....

I can't come any longer than 1700 something. I do know however that my great great great great grandfather (or something like that :p ) fought the Russians at Narva during the big nordic war :)

You can add dynasties. I've added Blair to part of Ireland, so I can potentially play as my own family.

Blairs were once nobles in parts of Ireland and Scotland. I probably should change it to the actual spelling of the time, generally Blaire for more historical accuracy though.

Are you sure that's originally Irish/Scots though? Without an o' it sounds similar to Butler, Joyce and other Irish names which are actually Norman because they trace back to the twelfth century Anglo-Norman invasion of Ireland by Strongbow and friends. Perhaps you should really be playing as William the conqueror ;)

As we're doing this at the moment, my own surname (Bodkin) is quite interesting. It doesn't seem to exist prior to the Norman invasion of Ireland when one of the nobles who went with Strongbow began to call himself it. This family then goes on to become one of the large merchant families in the semi-independent merchant city of Galway (one of the 'fourteen ancient tribes' of Galway as made fun of by Cromwell).

What's difficult to work out is why the name first arose, of course, the legend is he won a battle against an Irish knight using a short spear and 'Bodkin' is a bastardisation of the gaelic for this type of spear. This is, of course, unlikely. Other accounts seem to connect this noble to a family in Italy and he was probably on the run from Italy so changed his name.

All good fun, anyway and an incentive for me to play England and invade Ireland :)

OK, a little bit of web-searching convinced me I was wrong to place you (Blair) in England in 1066, sorry about that ;)

Still think you should probably be in Scotland, though :p

My direct blood line can actually be traced back and proven as far back as the 6th Century to a man named Fornjot, who was none other than the King of Finland.

Somehow I doubt that very much... ;)

About the rest of your post; sounds like you have a more legitimate claim to the crown of England than EIIR has.

Well, I got the joke too. I think at... The piast guys died out in the 16th right?

15th, actually...but that's not why its funny. Its funny because there are many Polish people who actually make this claim in wholehearted earnesty. In a country where 75% of lineage documents were destroyed, first by the Nazis, then by the Communists, this is quite the bold claim.

In actuality, I can't trace my roots back very far.
A great-great grandfather of mine on my mother's side was minor Prussian nobility. His daughter (my great-grandmother) fled to Berlin and married a Communist. :D Which from what I understand is the reason my grandmother spent her youth in a Nazi work camp.
Another great-grandfather was the bastard son of a Polish stablemaster who worked for some Russian. He was drafted into the Tsar's army when he was 15, and successfuly survived the war, the revolution, and retired happily at the tender age of 40. :D That's my mom's dad's dad.
Other than that, my family history is pretty spotty. I know my father's grandparents owned some land outside of Warsaw, but that's about it. Go figure...

Ok then. So much for a Swedes historyknowledge. But it was worth a shot. My grandfather also experienced alot of that shit in the east. He was born in Ukraine but was forced to flee to Poland because the commies wanted him for something he even didnt know about. But those commies were tricky invading Poland and chased him westward, to Germany. But the germans were even tricker figuring that a ukrainian fleeing commies must be a commiespy. Off you go to labourcamp. Atleast to poles were kinda nice to him.

My family (Gallicchio) is, in all probability, descended from Neapolitan peasants.

If I acquire CK, perhaps a peasant uprising might be in order...

And so he ended up in Denmark? Amazing. I must admit that I find these kinds of family stories facinating. I have a friend who once said that those in the east who survived the war were the craftiest, the most intelligent, and the best fit psychologicaly to deal with extraordinary circumstances. Whenever I hear stories like this I think of what he said, and think there must be some truth to it.

My family were rejects everywhere they went. One branch were Hugeonots and kicked out of France to Pennsylvania. Then they became British Empire loyalists and got kicked out of the U.S. to Ontario and they someone found their way to good 'ole alberta. Probably rejected by Ontario. Another branch claims relation to William Wallace, which I doubt, but they are part of the Robertson clan in Scotland.

My dad's side were all British Colonials. I have relatives living in South Africa, India, the middle east, etc. We have a calvary sabre that my dads great grandpa fought with in the Boer war and I think that great grandpa's dad was the police chief of Baghdad or something like that.

wow, what a random post

I do know my mother's side of the family is descended from the Sutherland clan...the oldest (and one of the more prestigious) unbroken Earldom in Scottland (and even near the top in all Britian).

My grandparents are into geneology so i'm gonna see how far back they can look up.

I envy you people who can go back that many generations and point at somebody and say "yep, i'm kin to them". I barely know anything about my great-grandparents. :( I'd love to know about my history because what i've read about my surname is pretty cool. McArthur (a variant of MacArthur) originates from Ireland and Scotland. In fact, Scotland had an interesting clan of MacArthurs.

Some think the name "might" (as in who knows) originate from a fellow named Cormac MacArt, a 3rd century Irish king. His descendants spread to the Argyll highlands of Scotland and ended up supporting Robert the Bruce in his bid as King of Scotland. They were then given huge tracts of land in Argyll. That's why I chose to play Argyll in 1066. I'd imagine that date is a little early for any of that clan to be in the area but who knows. :)

One of these days maybe i'll make a real effort to study my ancestry. No matter what it turns out to be, i'd be honored to be related to the Scottish clan. Heck, i'd LOVE to find out I was related to that line.

I'm another historical reject, my great-grandfather's brother migrated to the US in the 1920's and so we have a branch of the family there (one of whom has moved back to Sweden and lives in Stockholm...) I do believe my mother has some walloon blood but I'm not sure... Oh, my great-grandparents were fishermen. They ate fish.

That story sounds very familiar to me: by any chance was this branch of your family named Rutan/Ruttan and/or Demarest?
