I always knew that my ancestors arrived in England via the Norman invasion of 1066. But how little did I know who my ancestors really were.....

I've discovered in the last couple of days that I am an actual blood relative to William the Conqueror himself :D . My direct ancestor in 1066 was William's cousin (or going further back his grt. Grandfather).

My direct blood-line ancestors are actually in the game, so I really can play MY dynasty. The eldest of my ancestors represented is Robert, 3rd Count of EU. His son William is present in court (ancestor too) but is unmarried. IRL he was married and had a young son by 1066. This son, called Odard, was granted lands in Cheshire, England in 1086 and became the first person to use my surname.

My direct blood line can actually be traced back and proven as far back as the 6th Century to a man named Fornjot, who was none other than the King of Finland. Several generations later saw my ancestor Rollo ( a Viking noble ) conquer Neustria (aka Normandy) from the Frankish King, Charles the Simple in the year 911. Rollo became the first Duke of Normandy.

So, Robert of EU (called Robert Hastings in the game) is my own blood line...guess who I'm playing as next? :D .

If anyone has already played as the Count of Eu, would you kindly let me know what titles and territory you now own as I will write to their current day owners to offer them vassalship!!!! ;) .

If I happen to have an ugly daughter (unlikely I know) who I can't palm off to a good family you'd be welcome to marry her and join my court at Eu. ;) .

I'll put in good word too with my cousin the King of England... Put that pitch fork aside and arise Sir Soulitaire! But I'm putting your tax up to 55% though! :p

Do you have somemore info there? Odard's date of birth? His mothers name and origin? We might be able to include them in a later update of the scenario... :)

Proven? Oh, dear... That old line back to Fornjot is a legend, nothing else. It be proven with the same accuracy as the genealogy of the Nomenorean kings of Tolkien :p

Normandy is not Neustria. Neustria was the western part of the Merovingian Frankish kingdom, comprising the Seine and Loire basins. Normany was just a small piece of it :)

In general, Rollo is as far back as you can prove anything of his line, as his origin is disputed... (I can trace my ancestry to him too  )

You know, the longer you go back, the more heirs a guy has, it is just a matter of generation. If each children has 2 children that effectively live up to breed(not counting priests or young dead), that can make up to 134,217,728 heirs after 27 generations, quite an approximation for 9 centuries.....

Of course, crossed marriages do reduce that amount, but having ancestors of that caliber is not really surprising ;)

Do you think you have enough prestige to grab Queen Elizabeth's title?

Reminds me of that old movie "King Ralph"...

But tracing your ancestory back to the 6th century is quite a feat. I couldn't even tell where my great-grandfather was from... perhaps just a randomly spawned country cousin :)

You can add dynasties. I've added Blair to part of Ireland, so I can potentially play as my own family.

Blairs were once nobles in parts of Ireland and Scotland. I probably should change it to the actual spelling of the time, generally Blaire for more historical accuracy though.

OK, so maybe I got a little bit carried away with 'proven' as far back as 6thC. But the historians who've checked this lineage seem to like to quote that the legend is intertwined with fact. .

Odard is the son of William (Guilliame) and grandson of Robert, 3rd Count of Eu who is the in-game Count of Eu at the start of the 1066 senario.

Odard was born in 1061 in Normandy to the said William (who becomes 4th Count of Eu) and his second wife Jeanne (or Helisende), sister of Hugh Lupus, the Count of Avranches and Earl of Chester. (First wife was Beatrice de Builly)

It was Hugh Lupus who would in 1086, grant lands in Cheshire to Odard and Ordard would become first Lord of Dutton. (Dutton being my surname  ). Everyone who is descended from the Duttons is a direct descendent of Odard.

I've found out that Odard's elder half-brother, Henry 5th Count of Eu was also known as Lord of Hastings. Is this why the in-game dynasty name is Hastings?

There are various sources for my info. If you want to check it out on the net I'll find one of the website addresses for you.

Heh. The farthest back I've been able to trace my family (in any direction) was the generation that left Europe. But then, my direct-male-line dates back to Massachusetts in the 1630s, so I guess that's a lot better than most people can do....

The tale about the descendants of Fornjot is one of many different tales of origin around the world. It is told in the beginning of the old Norse Orkneyingers' saga. It explains how the offspring of this Fornjot spread acoss the land, and how their names gave name to the various parts of Norway. Of the twelve generations from Forjot down to Ragnvald, the alledged father of Rollo, only the last four have any shred of historic plausability to them, seeing how they are given in several unrelated tales, and even these are still not proven in any way by (near-)contemporary souces. Considering also how these four generations are given in various different, more or less similar variations I wouldn't trust them too much...

It's a nice story though :)
