Playing last CK2 game on current PC help deciding path

So I am almost finished my new build and have decided to give my current PC a gaming send off by going from 769 to end for my first time in CK2.

I have been debating what to do for this game. current ideas:

• Ireland start, feudal or merchant republic
• Norse start with goal of reforming quickly (again feudal or merchant)
• or somehow becoming norse on ireland, for the best of both world (feudal or merchant)

So what does reddit think I should do? If it helps, I have all DLC.

Also since I have not loaded CK2 in a while, is there any super direct ways to become norse ireland?

Well, if you use 867 instead, there's a Norse enclave in Scotland, Sudreyar, that's within county conquest range of Ulster. Don't know offhand if it's Catholic or Germanic but the culture is definitely Norse.

You could also start in Iceland in 769 and wait for free shipyards, then use a coastal conquest. I would recommend converting to Catholicism once you've unified the Green Isle; reforming the Germanic faith isn't really feasible from that direction.

Also, move capital to Dublin as soon as possible: the Icelandic counties only have two holdings apiece.

Starsword, 867 would make it slightly easier to hit Ireland. But I want to do the whole time line, a torture test if you will lol. Iceland is a solid idea, but the difficulty in reforming the germanic faith is an issue. Hmm hard to decide on my goals in the this game.

Half considering starting in Norway, blobbing and reforming the faith. Then heading over to Ireland and giving away the titles I hold in Norway. Mind im not sure how that would work. Is it possible to make a count level vassal independent? Is it possible to invade Ireland from Norway? One down fall of it being a year since I played last, I forget many obvious things.

Also feudal or merchant for a norse/germanic game? I feel the merchant republic might be a bit OP (if they retain the ability to raid)

Well, if you want to be the Fylkir you've really only got the choice to start in Scandinavia and then snatch territory and raid until you can reform. Conquering Ireland would be something you do later.

You certainly can grant independence to your Norwegian territories if you decide to move fully to the British Isles.

Feudal or merchant republic could go either way; personally I prefer feudalism because I can control succession more cheaply.

Stay Norse and you'll retain raiding regardless of where you go with religion or government. To raid, one or more of three conditions must be true:

• Your government must be tribal or nomad
• Your religion permits raiding (pagan or Hindu)
• Your culture permits raiding (Norse, Altaic group, or Nahua)

Starsword, again thanks for the reply. Having never reformed the Norse faith and become the Fylkir, I think that is a game goal. Guess I will start in Scandinavia, rush the reform and decide if moving to the British Isles is the way to go. Or just get the Scandinavia empire rolling.

Main reason for taking Ireland as my main is nostalgia. I've spent countless hours in that space of land. Feels right to make the last game on this PC fit the theme.

I am thinking feudal this game simply because it's been quite a while since I played and it will be a lot more familiar.

Thanks for the raiding tips. Should make life a lot easier if I can keep raiding for money through out the game.
