I wonder if anyone here has had experience in playing beyond the 1948 end date. I tried to play this game again just to see if I can get beyond the end date with some modifications in the Defines page using a minor (I set the end date to 3000), and had an interesting experience.

Specifically, I noticed that right after the game goes beyond 12.31.48, and the existing game is saved and then reloaded in 1949, the games seems to 'reset.' All of my existing units were gone, no more ministers, politics were completely screwed (no one in Axis/Allied after the 1949 reload), and all of my leaders were gone as well. So while it seems like it is possible to go chronicaly beyond 1948, the game is hard coded in such a way that one cannot really play it in a continuity.

Out of curiosity, I edited the Bookmarks page for the 1936 scenario so that it will begin in 1949 instead. Here, the ministers and leaders did not get deleted, but the politics were chaotic like before, only worse: basically, everyone was at war with someone and there were instand liberations/surrenders for no apparent reason. And starting the '1936' scenario in 1949, while functional, does not seem to show the benefits of the community's optimization 'mods,' like Timdog's. The game seems to revert to the 'original' processing settings, even though the only scripts in the Scripts section were those modded by Timdog et al. So here the game appears to revert to being unplayable on speed alone, even if one is willing to accept the fantasy diplomacy at the beginning.

So I was wondering if there are any No Time Limit Mods out there or if anyone has had a different experience. I for one do not like the time limit at all, especially since I like the role of a minor. It always puzzles me as to why PI always hardcodes the game to end at a specific date, whereas games like CIV will always allow you the option to continue after a defined period ends. I don't need extra techs or anything like that, just the comfort of knowing that I can take my time and do whatever I want. Could be a part in the design of an expansion in the future, I guess, although seems awfully inconvenient to the gamer.

Argh, what a tragic blow! I thought you could just set the date, like they say in the FAQ... Damn. And I was hoping to play until around 1960. Could it be that maybe your save was corrupted or something?
I don't understand why there's a hardcode either. Well, they sometimes do these wierd things... CA with their Total War series, too...

Yeah, it is another disappointment I have in the game. I mean there really is no technical reason why the date HAS to be hardcoded this way, except for the obvious reason of releasing an expansion to further charge the customers later on.

And I am pretty sure that this is not a corrupted file. When I first started this game, I went to defines and set the end date to 3000, and the start date to 1934. The start date turned out fine, started right at 1934, but once I went beyond 1948 and saved my game in May 1949, and then reloaded this save, the game was reset: no leaders, no ministers, diplomacy out of whack, units completely disappeared, technology went back to ground zero, etc. I should mention that I used the community's SaveCleaner a couple of times to clean out the Sunk Ships file, and each time I used it the file was alright (my thanks to these individuals, or otherwise this game would have been unplayable in 1941 already) with no corruption in diplomacy or anything else. Therefore, I think the reason is most likely a hardcoded end date that cuts off any existing game beyond 1948.

Note you technically you CAN play beyond 1948, just pretty much with your game erased and the processing speed back to the original HOI3 levels, which I would take to be unacceptable.

P.S. I don't know about the other Total War games, but Rome Total War like Civ will allow you, IIRC, to continue after the end date. No extra content of course, but I am perfectly fine with that. It just seems too awkward to arbitrarily cut off a game at a set date.

Shunwei: iirc it's hardcoded, but reaching it is almost impossible, you have time to conquer the entire map several times over.

j_rogers: Please do, it is after all a crucial issue.
