Playing at a university

Ok Im not, but my friend is. We cant do a multiplayer no matter what it seems. Even tried hamachi and no go. So is this just impossible due to school router / firewall, since he cant open ports? Or has someone actually gotten it to work? I got it to work with another friend, then when the university one tried to type in the ip and join, it just froze for awhile, then nothing happened. Same versions and everything, and if we use vnet, I can see a game he makes, but get the no game found at that ip.

did you "delete" the spaces behind the ip? could be a reason for freezing and crashing...
