Playing as Thirteen Colonies?

Although I originally intended to just play England I decided to try Thirteen Colonies instead.

Here's the situation so far:

At what point do you think I should swap to the Thirteen? They are picking pretty bad idea groups so I don't want to tarry too much.

Other general tips appreciated. Not going for the achievement.

The colonies haven't picked any Colonist ideas and I want to make sure that England won't be taking any provinces that i want. At the very least I want to gather enough coastline so I can get the historical 13 colonies and prevent England from moving too much inland (I'll let them have Canada though).

Nail down the coastline and switch over before they get to their fourth idea group.

I did it to France when I did France -> CN -> USA.

The two main options are either give them crap (eg. Economic and Espionage) or good ones for doing things that aren't colonizing, like Offensive and Administrative to encourage them to go mainland. Personally, I'd go for anything diplomatic and administrative that doesn't help colonize to make the AI take longer to choose another from those categories (AI doesn't like to pick multiple same-type groups in a row).

Pick the Thirteen Colonies when they become historically availabe (~1610) and do it the proper way.

But everything they colonize will be given to you right? (in the eastern American region at least)

Not once you switch to them. Why would England give land to a nation that is no longer their subject?

Wait, What? You are England's subject until you declare independence. Are you saying AI England can control which provinces in Colonial Regions will/will not go to their CN in that nation?

I just swapped to 13 Colonies and I became independent.

You don't just "switch" to the colonial nation, you release and play as it. IIRC it also can't be done before they reach 50% liberty desire, so you need to really crank up those tariffs.

If you use the subjects view to play as a CN, then you're releasing them, so you're not really playing as a CN.
If you use the console or reload the save and choose the CN, you are not independent and allowing your overlord to colonize will benefit you.

I had a Great Britain game that didn't go so well, but luckily I had a saved game when the Thirteen Colonies formed on day one just in case I felt like giving them ago. I'm still GB's subject until I declare independence and all colonies they create in that region go to me. Obviously I'm not playing ironman.

You don't just "switch" to the colonial nation, you release and play as it. IIRC it also can't be done before they reach 50% liberty desire, so you need to really crank up those tariffs.

Ahh ok. my mistake. When I did this I did the 1610 start as the thirteen colonies and I was still a subject. Thanks for clarifying.
