So, after finding out we can actually play as anyone we want in the demo (as long as you quickly pick them before the game starts up, and after you select a character you were meant to play as), I decided to try a game as a pagan.

Interesting circumstances, as you almost always get destroyed by your catholic neighbors in the name of god. They get some nice bonuses though (the warrior cult gives them lots of extra troops), but it's not enough to protect you from the greedy christian kings.

Just a thought, they should have a mechanic that allows you to convert to Catholicism as a way of trying to placate the crusaders, and avoid getting destroyed.

Isn't being able to play as a pagan a bug though? I thought it wouldn't be available in the final release.

It wont, you are not ment to be able to play them

Game's not really designed for you to be able to play as a pagan -- IIRC, they have no events, or anything else that Christian kings get.

However, you can play as a heretic!

(assuming you convert to a heresy)

I played as duke of karelia and succeeded in forging the kingdom of Finland. 2 castles and ducal claims allow to take over the whole of duchy. While doing this the chancellor can fabricate claims on 2 estonian counties, which, once taken, will allow usurping the dukedom. After this the rest of Finland will be easy to round up, as long as the nordic monarchs do not come crusading. Once the kingdom is up get a christian wife and make her tutor your heir. And thus the christian kingdom of Finland was born. It was a good game.

Pagans do lack in stuff, but they are not ment to be played. Maybe once with mods and dlcs.

We'll see, the "click while loading" thing might still exist in the full version. Even if you aren't "meant" to play them, muslims and pagans can still be fun to play.

Probably will be, tho personally I prefer the christian kingdoms in this. Th events really give quite alot life to the game so it's just not mindless conquest like most games RTS or TW games

The first dlc/expansion will probably include at least rudimentary ability to play as Pagans or Muslims.

Hopefully.

They can call it "Allahu Akbar", as opposed to the "Deus Vult" of CK1.

If you're really not able to play as Pagans/Muslims in the full CK2, I'm keeping the demo installed until the expansion, and back-dating the files so I can play longer. That's just silly. Events aren't everything. Twenty years of the Samoyed-Romanovs was insanely fun.

Just a thought, they should have a mechanic that allows you to convert to Catholicism as a way of trying to placate the crusaders, and avoid getting destroyed.

I think having your heir educated by a Christian should convert them, but I didn't have a chance to see the results before the demo cut out. Oh, and appointing a Christian to be your religious council dude could work too - as King of France I got an offer to convert to some sort of heresy from mine.

That's ridiculous. The only thing missing is appropriate events, which could very easily be modded in. There's already a rudimentary ability to play as Pagans or Muslims in the demo, I haven't even played a single game as a christian so far.

Played a long game with Yatviags trying to create Lithuania. After Poland took Prussia from me in a holy war I decided to convert. Luckily I had foreseen this and had a few Catholic characters in court. Things were tough with my underage Catholic ruler, but I managed to turn it around and have a lot of fun converting.

Never did manage to create Lithuania because Poland managed to get too many provinces before me. I was waiting for the old Polish king to die to attack them when they are weak but the game crashed before that happened.

..It really isn't, trust me. It might work out well for Muslims to jerry-rig the current system, but pagans should not be having some over-arching master of their faith. It could be good to have "Top-liege" based High Priests, though, as advisor to the highest level ruler of your realm and with some authority (so if an Ásatrú Iceland was independent they'd have the Allsherjargoði, in Sweden important hofgoðar of Uppsala etc.), but that's only if done subtly, as they're just influential high Priests.

It's not like pagans don't get any events at all. They get events but some of them are clearly meant for christians only like 'Do I want to go to church on Sunday?' or something like that.

In my experience the game got a lot more fun once I converted. It was actually a big challenge with your diminished army and pagan subjects.
