PLaying as France, I would frankly like to see if I can win the war against the Germans without US or SU aid, but these two countries always enter the war by the end of 1942 at the latest? How can i modify the Ai files to change that>

It is doable to defeat Germany with France, without SU or US help... in the 1936 scenario, if you play well and do not waste time, in 1941 all can be finished (assuming you waited for German DOW in 1939). By that time it is unlikely that either US or SU has entered the war already. My personnal record (vanilla 1.06c normal/normal) is Feb 41... go for it ! ;)

In the 1939 scenario, well I dunno. All info welcome.

But if you want to change AI behavior on this topic, look for the "agression priorities" in the AI files, and remove Germany from the list. It should at least deter soviet attack a while.

I've tried and I personally cannot beat the Germans by late 1941. We are pretty much stalemated, with me having a slight advantage. It is for that reason that I'd wish to see if I could win without SU/US interference - otherwise, the game is simply not that interesting since the war entry by either one of these two nations makes my winning inevitable and routine.

One trick that works for me is to edit the war listings in the save file. As soon as either the US or SU declare war, save the game and remove them from the war. The US will almost always be listed with the allies, just delete them along with Lib. and Phi. The SU will probably be listed as a seperate war entry item. Delete the whole war for the SU. I've found that once a country is removed this way it doesn't seem to declare war later, probably because the DOW is event driven.

The war listings are either just before or just after the province listing in the save file. To delete the war for the US you also have to remove them from the allies list at the same time. It is near the beginning of the save file.

Thanks- Can you please elaborate on what you mean by "delet the whole war for SU?"

A war is nothing more than a paragraph in the save file. Back it up, open it up in Notepad and take a look for "SOV MON" on a defender line, and "GER ...rest of axis" on an attacker line. Looking at it, it's simple to figure out. After you make sure you're deleting the right portion, take out the whole paragraph.

The previous reply is correct. I suspect you have never edited the game before, so I will elaborate a little.

The save files are merely text files that open up with notepad. There are 2 files associated per save, a massive one that you work with and a little one that you ignore. If you have some concerns about this, open up an old save that you probably will never go back to and look at it first.

(I'm doing the following sequence from memory, so forgive minor errors.)

The beginning of the save file is a listing of all countires playable, followed by the 3 alliances. Next is the weather, after that a listing of the various wars and participants. Next is the individual province description and the remaining 99.99% of the file are the details of each country, including ministers, military leaders and armed forces. (It is tough to find a country in this list because it is so long.) All of this data may be altered as you please. (Except don't add units, the sequential numbering system of units will trip you up.)

Anyway, for your issue, find the listing of the wars and participants. You can delete or add individual countries to a war or you can delete an entire war. For that matter you can create a war this way also. The logic is fairly obvious, just learn the sequence numbering. Also if you delete or add an entire item make sure you get the "}" notations properly. These define each event and must be in proper sequence. Just compare your work with the listings before and after.

Altering a backup the first few times is a good idea. After that, no backup required.

This is ridiculous and absurd on its face without editing files to make France a major player. Taking HOI 1.06C I would safely say it could not be done.

Boggle on, Arax. A human France with a competent player won't lose a single province to the Germans (Build forts to the coast since 1936, and remember not to care about Benelux in the CORE French Fort Crisis events), and a good player, with the help of the Canadians (gotta love those Canadians) can push the Germans back to win the war in a few years.
