Playing a Non-European Colonizer.

Well I havn't really played a European Colonizer, only time I colonized was to pass time between wars in Europe.

Right now I'm playing Gujarat and intend to colonize the west indies before those dastardly Portuguese or Dutch show up.

Any suggestions?

I think LordLeto is asking for some help playing as Gujarat. Japan may be a good option to choose to colonize but he has already chosen to play as this indian country.

Anyways, halfway throgh the 14th century and the conversion from land to naval is near compleate(Gujarat has decent sliders, mostly middle of the road for everything). When do I get the chance at random explorers?

I think it's the 1550ies you get your first shot at getting some, although you need trade 3 and naval 11 and your sliders towards naval to get some.

If you don't take maps from someone else that is

Probably the best choice is to take Vijaingar's (sp?) colonies in the south of India .. but it'll cost a lot of money due to the low success chance.

Another choice is to take the Indonesian islands.

Neither of those choices requires an explorer .. just take some capital's (eg. Vijaingar, Malacca/Mataram) by siege and you should discover them automatically.

But there's no way you'll be able to get to the Caribbean before the europeans. Even if you have the ideal DP settings (ie. Land 1, Merchantilism 1), you need to get to Trade 3 and Naval 11. It also has to be at least 1550.

Even if you do get all that, you have to get lucky in your events.

The odds are definitely stacked against non-europeans ..

I agree - the West Indies is going to be near impossible, but you could try sailing across the Pacific and colonising America from the West - including a couple of good gold provinces in California and the Yukon.

If he want's to get there before Portuguese or Dutchs he will need to be fast. Portugal star colonizing Indonesia from 1450 aprox. (or that what I saw when I played as Atehj). You will have to fight for them 'cause Portugal won't cede easily. They will establish TP so you will probably have to DoW on them in order to burn them.

Yeah I ment the "east indies." Heading into the Carib is out of the question. Maybe the west coast of N/S America. If that. But my eye is on the EAST Indies and Australia/NZ.

I'd also recommend east coast of Africa. Zimbabwe has some nice gold provinces.

Or the alternative would be to bribe Portugal for military access, send some troops into the TP and then attack the natives and run away. They'll proceed to burn the Portuguese TP down...

This is amazing. I've never seen Europeans in India or Indonesia anywhere near that early. In my experience you have until the latter half of the 1500s before you need to be seriously worried about European competition.

Playing Gujarat, I would give top priority to colonizing the 10 open provinces in India and Ceylon. They are all either good or exceptionally good tax values, plus as Gujarat you can keep the frontier bonus for a while and get more colonists. Once India is taken care of, proceed to Indonesia if possible, especially Jakarta which is a fantastic value.

The hard part will be getting any explorers. Except for nations with scripted explorers, as Spain and Portugal for example, as earlier noted you have to have your naval slider <= 3 and naval tech at least 11, plus be at 1550 or later. Playing a 3rd world nation these conditions are likely to keep you from getting explorers for a long time, and even then you have to be lucky to get one. In theory you might be able to get good relations with Malacca or Atjeh and trade maps with them, but I think this is a longshot.

Well its about 1490 and I should have lvl 4 infra by 1525(or so), after that its on to Trade 3(already have trade 2) and then Infra 5. After that I guess I'll have to speed to Navy 11. I've gotten rather lucky, took 2 provinces off of Delhi(which are now my good buddies), 2 off the Timurd(thru revolt) and colonized 3(working on a 4th). Annezed Jodhpor for 11 provinces total(from the starting 4 of Gujarat).

Trade is exceptionally expensive for me. 6 Ducats to send traders to my own CoT. (used to the 1 or 2 in Europe and the Mid East). And its a little difficult to keep traders in the CoT and my colonies expanding.

Plus Bombay and Gao(which I see port going after early) were my first colonies.

Try to take as many cots as possible to make your economy better so you can focus on one tech tree in a time.

Traded for maps so now I got my eye on the Malacca CoT whos owner is down to two provinces. Just need to cozey up to Ajteh(sp?). Though Delhi's constant wars with a rather strong Vij. are getting annoying.

Mughals are also on the sceen, ceded the two provinces that revolted away from the Timurds to them. And made another province on the tip of India so I'm down to 10. Though probably better off w/o Kabul and Quetta, they were differnt culture anyways.

Portugal showed up in Keran(i think). Thinking of dashing in and out to destroy their 1k army with a conquistador there like someone suggested for their TPs.

Trade maps to get Egypt. Go to war with the Mamelukes and take Alexandria and MA; it is much easier if the Mamelukes are fighting in the north, west, or both when you go in. Build a galley fleet at Alexandria, buy MA from Algiers, and then go fight the Spanish when they are busy in another war early in the 16th century. With luck they will be allied to Portugal and you can get both sets of maps and that wonderful early shipyard + CoT combination. I've gotten virtually all of the West Indies with Nubia and a good number using Tibet.
