Player armies not retreating: bug or feature?

When an AI-controlled army is defeated by me in battle and has no friendly provinces to retreat into, it retreats into my provinces. I then have to chase it around my country to destroy it, while it loots all my provinces. I can accept this. However, when my armies are defeated and have no friendly provinces to retreat into, they are completely and instantly annihilated. Why this discrepancy? Is it a bug, or a feature intended to help the AI (sort of like the "no attrition for AI navies" band-aid)? I wouldn't mind losing my armies (and leaders!) so much if I could at least see the same thing happening to the AI, but this double-standard business is pretty irritating.

If you attack from a ship which then moves away before the combat ends you are annihilated, otherwise I think it happens now and then. I'd check for leaders in the opposing army.

I have noticed that too - chasing those 0 armies (especially in fortress-less colonies) can be REALLY frustrating. It think this is in the same vein as "no attrition" thing..

arrggghhh

I hate that. Once I was playing as the ottomans (not that I have played any other country yet) I beat some other country's army of 2k. But they kept on retreating to other provinces. My army of 20k was chasing him province after province and he kept retreating. This went on for about 10 rounds untill the 2 k army was all killed. 3 provinces were looted by just a 2 k army and it took me quite sometime to kill them all since they retreated without much casualties every time.

I think that is quite stupid, they should not be allowed retreat for 10 times in a row into different provinces when my stronger army chases them.

You need to split your army and cut off the retreating scoundrels. I was wailing on the Aztecs in one game with all their provinces under seige, chasing a 10,000-strong band from province to province for 5 years before I figured it out.

Or you could try leaving them alone for a month or two until their morale is restored. They'll most probably sit where they are, so only one province gets trashed, and then when you lay into them again you'll be able to inflict heavier casualties before they run away - maybe even wipe them out.

I think what is happening is that the AI retreated from batle before he was defeated. You can do the same thing. If you do that then you can select which provence to move to!

This was certainly a problem for me. I was attacking Lenape + Iroquis, and they got hunted into my territory. I just had one colonial city, the rest was trading posts.

Guess which little army burnt them?

:(

Of course I should have left some guards, but I didn´t think of that. I´ll certainly do it next time...
