My first game I got it. In this one I just started, Austria allied me, so it might go abit differently.
Feels like my portugal game where Spain and France suddenly decided to wipe me out just for fun. 
Keep your friends close and those who are likely to brutally murder you closer. Like Austria.
I ended up asking Portugal for fleet basing rights and trying to start a colonial empire. I looked west, Austria and their allies, I looked east, Otto and their allies.

Doesn't help that most of the delish little states in your surroundings are part of the empire, and as such will bring down the legions of austria if you try to expand. Managed to do some nice expansion into the more southern italian areas like papal states, and was feeling really good about myself, when both austria and ottomans decided it was about time to curbstomp my emergent dominion. Also rebels suck...
I appeased the Ottomans and crushed Milan, Switzerland and Austria in a war. Amittedly I had a little help from the England-Bohemia-Hungary alliance who kept a few Austrian armies busy so that I could wipe out a Milanese 12k stack, a Swiss 10k stack and 2 Austrian/Palatine 20k stacks before they could be united. Having naval supremacy and an island to retreat to if things go bad also helped quite a bit. I guess playing Venice is a little bit like playing the lottery. Sometimes you win but many other times you just lose.
Don't trust them. I did and they dishonoured my call to arms when The Ottomans came for me. The Habsburgs have cores on Venetian territory and will get a mission to take them back. They will come after you when you are weak and at war with The Ottomans.
I struggled valiantly as Venice a few times. Got Ragusa once, was preparing to engage Naples. Ottos left me alone, but I got greedy and forgot that Ferrara is HRE. Austria smash. Done.
Ottomans was a much better start to learn the new mechanics, imho.

I actually found Venice really easy, but maybe that was because I never had to go to war against the Ottomans. Periodically sending a diplomat over there to raise relations helped me keep my relationship with them in the positives. Also, Austria seemed to self-destruct fairly quickly. After about 10 years into the game, while I was busy coring Naples, I saw that a succession of wars and rebels had driven them down to less than 8000 troops. Bavaria and I partitioned them pretty quick, and then there was nothing to stop me from gobbing up the rest of northern Italy.
So as long as you're able to keep the Emperor weak and appease the Ottomans, it should be smooth sailing. I could see how things would get hairy otherwise.

Diplomcy is indeed the way to go with Venice. Historically, Venice only survived through diplomacy. I like that the game reflects that.
My first game, I got attacked by Austria, the Ottoman Empire and Milan. My second game, I allied myself with Austria. They wouldn't help my in my planned wars against the Ottomans, but it at least kept them from attacking me.
In my first game I got smashed by Ottos, but next time I was smart enough to improve relations with them, buying me time to conquer Ragusa and Bosnia, and then expand to Italy. All without a single war with Ottos. Was quite fun.
I agree. As the Ottomans you can make a lot of mistakes and still win because you are one of the richest and most powerful countries. At the 1492 start the Mameluks are not really a threat to you so the only thing you have to watch out for is a Polish-Hungarian-Austrian coalition.
First thing I did when I played Venice was ally someone powerful like France or England (Yes, they'll accept on day 1 and Austrians are pretty untrustworthy) Then basically try to conquer Milan when they're at war with someone. Once you become a powerhouse in Northern Italy, you're all set. My time ran out before I could finish it and unite Italy
The Ottomans are just plain easy... I went on a conquering rampage through Mameluks and the northern hordes, got Coalition'd by Qara Qoyunlu and most of the Arabian peninsula and won all of them. I wanted to scream Lu Bu style;: "Can't anyone provide me with a decent challenge??".
There is a tiny bit of redundancy around - French cores on Milan, Italian Ambitions, Spanish missions to reclaim Naples, the DHE about the Italian Wars AND Our Claims to Northern Italy. In truth, only the French cores on Milan and the Italian Wars DHE would be needed.
