Playable minors

Presumably most countries will in theory be playable?

I'm just trying to remember what I can of world history in that era - what will be the ultimate challenge?
Montenegro?
The Zulus?
The Whirling Dervishes (where was that - Sudan?)
The decrepit Ottomans?
Texas?
Play Sitting Bull and declare independence?

any Latin American country will be really interesting to play. I can't wait to play Peru to avenge the guano wars.

Hmm...always hated that word.."minors"..Suggests that Serbia or Sri Lanka isn´t comparable with the likes of France or England..hmm..I guess it will be Great Britain in this game..

I agree with you. At least it clearly shows what counts: violence and power.

That said, I'm looking forward to a nice range of playable nations.

They're not comparable.

In terms of power, Sri lanka and Serbia don't compare with Great Britain and France.

the Ottomans are still a major in this time, just a very weak one.

Yes, it's an EU1 vet thing. Back in the day, we called 'em minors if you couldn't play them.

But in a game like this, Serbia just isn't comparable to GB in the 19th century ... definitely more of a challenge. It's not a comment on the inherent value of the people.

It´s the word I don´t like..It gives me the creeps..I visualize the US as a mobster with machinegun...and Luxemburg as the 10-year old choirboy..

I hope there are a couple of events involving Panama and the canal, even if the country basically ends up being a late game revolter/vassal (or whatever are the equivalent terms used in Victoria), it could be interesting to play.

Since every country is playable in EU2 and HOI (and EU1 with modding) I presume Victoria will continue the trend.

But what'll be interesting is whether it's playable or not. To be fair, Canada didn't have a whole lot of independence in foreign plicy until very late in this time period.

That´s an interesting quesition..as I see it no british colony should be playable from the start..but it´s too early to say really..

It all depends on how Colonies will be be able to become independant. If it is possible given certain conditions to "revolt" earlier then it may be more entertaining.

Likely the game will treat Canada as a hard coded event given the fact that, as you point out, it operated primarly as a colony for much of the game period.

Mexico should prove to be interesting, they got revolts (texas and Yucatan) foreign invasions (US and France) and their whole lack stability in general should prove to be fun .

How about Spain and Portugal?


I just realised that I know virtually nothing about either of their histories between the Peninsular War in the Naploeonic era and the Spanish Civil War ..... clearly I need this game badly.

I wouldn't call the Ottoman's minor...More like a middle power, along with Italy and Spain. Now, for true minor, but still fun, I'd go for Japan. They aren't quite powerful until very late in this time period, but, with some major work...Who knows?

For Spain:

Independance of the South and Central American colonies.
The Carlist wars.
The First Republic.
Spanish-American war.

That's for starters.
