Anyone have any idea if they will be independantly playable or not? So far I haven't heard or read anything.

As far as Ethiopia goes, wasn't it Italian at this point? I'm not sure, but I thought they controlled the bulk of North Eastern Africa, as well as the Libyan region. Kinda foggy on European african holdings at this point....

Let me clear the fog, India had the capacity to become an industrial giant, but not yet, as they werent really a focus of those efforts.

As far as Ethiopia goes, Italy is at war with them.

Thanks. =) Any country with great resources and a large population may become an industrial giant, granted. I just didn't think India had the infrastructure quite yet to put its assets into motion. However, under human control, in X year's time, it would be great, as you say, to make India into an industrial power. That's another thing with the Soviets, as with India, limitless potential (I don't think any country, even today after all the losses does any other country have the vast amount of natural resources as Russia). I think an SU concentrating on inner development, and staying out of the war for a few years, with self-improvement could dwarf even the US in industrial capacity. Unfortunately, that's in a perfect world where the SU isnt lead by a communist regime and isnt in essence the SU.

About Ethiopia, I felt like an idiot after asking that when I looked back up and saw it had already been answered... doh! :D

Also, about Oz and the bunch, any idea's of whether they will be autonomous?

We'll we should be (Aust) as we'd been independent from the UK since 1901:) I'd guess that Aust, NZ, SthAfr and Canada will be independent but allied or some such thing to the UK. India on the other hand was an UK Colony still so they should be controlled by the British player/empire.

Very much pleased here. :) Never was really too interested in
Ey-you until I married an Aussie (S. African turned Aussie anyway). Now i'm very much excited by taking WWII from their perspective. As far as ties to the UK go, to my understanding Aus, is somewhat like Moldavia is to Russia currently, a part of the country, but yet completely autonomous. However any attempt to reign in the sheep so to say would break all remaining ties. However, those ties in 1930's and 40's I figured would be stronger in UK-Oz relations, maybe with Aus having to supply the UK with X percent of its armed forces... Anyway, its re-assuring to hear that someone else thinks that they will be seperate. :)

As far as I'm concerned the only way to represent the commenwealth in the game is to make an entirely different system for it. The relationship between Britain and Canada, Aus, NZ etc. can't simply be represented as an alliance, nor can they be part of the UK. Britain still had power over those countries, more so than in an alliance, but far less than if they were actually still part of the Empire.

You have all forgot Turkey. Ally with the Soviets, take a bunch of the Middle east and then go for South America. Soon after South America you could declare war on many small nations in the Pacific. Then try to take Italy... when Italy is yours, the world will fall....

As far as Australia, Canada, and maybe even New Zealand go, I hope they are seperate playable countries from the British Empire. As by this time they had their own sub government structure set up, as well as independant industrial capacity. Personally, i'd love to play just an Aussie game and put the Japanese right back where they belong, Japan. =)

What's more all hte British dominiums sent separate war declarations on Germany in 1939. But I am sure that Paradox payed attention to such important details.

The same remark as to Canada, Australia, NZ. Of course. Ethiopia must be at war with Italy on 1 January 1936.

So, Sweden won't be playable either then? :p

(j/k)

I suppose it won't be all that much fun sitting around in Norway waiting for the Germans to invade and Quisling to topple me.

If you edit the files I think you can play Monaco, San Marino, or Andorra also.

I believe the government shared that sentiment as well... ;)

Seriously, shouldn't this thread discuss "playable" instead of "selectable" countries? Are there any "minor" nations that are at all interesting?

That would depend on what you consider to be a 'minor' power and what you consider to be 'interesting'.

Spain, Czech, Sweden. Poland and Turkey should be relatively strong, but you're (I hope) not going to be able to beat up a major power with them. With the possible exception of the Czech’s if they get in early they would be quite powerful.

As for interesting that would depend purely on the individual. I'd consider it interesting to play the Finns for example. I'd like to see if I can take Murmansk and Leningrad off the Bear. I'd also be interested in playing Mexico or one of the South American countries just to do some what ifs.

Why would anyone want to play as Sweden? They weren't even in the war. Norway was... well, hardly in a glorious way, but still fought along with her allies even when being occupied. *

* This of course is only relevant for the resistance at home and the Free Norwegian Forces in Britain and Canada. Not for those thousands who collaborated. :)

Wouldn't it be fun to play as Sweden and see what happens if you actually join one side or the other?
