Tired of having your ships blown out of orbit? Yeah, me too.

Why not have planetary ship hangars? Of course, you'd have to build them.

So long as you had planetary defenses (shields, troops) your ships could be safely nestled away planetside.

Now you can hunker down and (hopefully) withstand a planetary siege, rather than just be wiped out in the vast emptiness of space.

An ability to "mothball" ships when I'm not using them would also be appreciated. They would be partially stripped down and no longer be as much of a cost of resources for maintenance. It would take a bit of time and resources to rearm them but not as much as building new ships. They could potentially even be auto-upgraded in the process since they are essentially stripped of their weapons and replaced anyway.

If you build the crew quarters you have -20% upkeep to ships docked at the station.

Less maintenance, yes. Auto-upgrade, no. If you're stripping their weapons, presumably for another ship, you'd have to manufacture a new set, and you wouldn't manufacture them for a ship not in commission.
