So, when I was speaking to my friends we all for the most part agreed that planetary invasions on Stellaris seem a bit... bland. It mainly goes as follows: Beat enemy fleet, drop 15 armies on the planet after bombardment, you win in about a month, GG move on to the next.
In general my idea goes as follows: When you build armies on the planet through the "armies" tab, have you be able to place them on tiles within said planet, the armies can be stacked, as of now I think just two per tile would be fairly balanced. Give a modifier for actually having the tile completely occupied vs just a light garrison such as one army (as it'd be quite spread out given we're talking planetary scale). Upon an invasion fleet arriving, the invasion fleet can decide what tiles its troops land in and how many land per tile (with restrictions to how many per tile of course). From there the planetary war would ensue where both sides could would spawn new troops depending on the control of strategic resources. The troops for the invaders could either be imported from nearby planets which would take longer, or could be conscripted from volunteers on the planet, who would be weaker, however they'd be an immediate boost to manpower. The armies would fight over the tiles and once a set percentage of the planet fell (depending on war goal), it'd surrender.
That is the basic premise of my idea for an overhaul of the ground combat in Stellaris, there's other concepts as well such as planetary unique shield generators which could shield their surrounding regions from orbital bombardments to help protect from simply people glassing planets and moving on.
In any case, sorry for the wall of text, it was just on my mind and I did not want it to go untyped. I hope this is well received.
Sorry, last minute adendum to this: AI generals would have more relevance as you could have them control the invasion if you're too busy elsewhere actually controlling the empire.
