On the Stream they just mentioned the Sectors dont have a (settled) planet limit, while you have a limit on core worlds and on Sectors(?)

While i dont liek ghardlimits and prefer sliding scales (aka dimishing returns) i see why this is necessary form a gamemechanic pont of view.
But I still wonder what the "ingame" logic behind this desing decision is (aka the "explanation" why it is "realistic")
I know this is not important to many people, but I like my games to make some form of sense to my SciFi mind.

Sectors make sense to me in that they represent the difficulty of a central administration to effectively control planets far away much like colonial powers had trouble controlling territories and used things like viceroys to improve that. It also serves to stop people from having to micromanage 100 planets. Though, I will be impressed if they manage to reduce frustrating micromanagement without increasing frustrating 'Why is AI doing that?!" management.

My guess on why they don't have a limit on planets is the guys in charge of sectors don't have to worry about foreign policy, domestic policy, military construction, research etc while the central government does. The limit on sectors is probably implemented instead as while you could give everything to one sector it would make sector independence factions more powerful due to the higher population.

Plus you can specialise sectors to do certain things and limits would be frustrating for example if you had a buffer zone sector focused on building defences that couldn't cover the whole border due to a planet limit.

Subviceroys. Subviceroys have subsubviceroys. The bureaucracy is expanding to meet the needs of the expanding bureaucracy.

I agree that would be a problem but I assume their will some limit like in CK2 with demesne size limiting you and your vassals. It would make sense to me for sector size and core worlds size to close to the same.

Well, I imagine the primary problem you'll run into is that you'll always have resource shortages and you'll be extremely cumbersome to manage. Order the megasector to do credits, and suddenly you have no minerals. Ask for research, and again the other resources would go into a massive shortage.
Having multiple smaller ones means you can actually have sectors balance each other out.

I Dont think it is in game as an actual Mechanic like in CK2, but i like to imagine it works that way (thats currently enough to satisfy me)

depends on how fast the communication works. if it takes weeks or month to get informations from a to b, a decission maker at point b makes sense, if its just days, well it doesnt make so much sense to give up to much controll.

EU4 has some very nice mechanics for that, local autonomie, different typs of cores and colonial states/tradecompanys. give the pop a bonus if local autonomie isnt low in territorial world and voila, you`ve got yourself a somewhat realictic way of portraying distant places that is tested in another PI game
