About the culture of the Templars, I don't quite see why they should have any other culture than French. After all, the order was created by French knights, all the High Masters were French, and so were most of the knights.

You must remember that at the time each country had its own Order: the French had the Templars, the German had the Teutonics, the Spanish had a bunch of national orders devoted to the Reconquista, and so on. Of course, in each order one could find "foreigners" (even if this adjective is no relevant at the time), but giving many cultures because there actualy was a few German, Spaniards or Englishin the Temple would be stupid.

PS: If you're gonna give the Templars a CB against The Knights of Saint John, you should give them a CB against the Teutonics as well.
PPS: The crosses Columbus had on his sails were not Templar crosses.

Eochaid old son - think you'll find that the Knights of Christ, Teutonic Order, Knights of the Sword and various others were founded by ex-Templars seeking to escape the wrath of France and the dissolution of their Order. Incidentally - this occurred on Friday 13th 1307, and gave rise to the popular superstition about that combination of day / date being unlucky...

On Culture (again) : the order was originally founded by French Knights, yes, but at a time when 'France' as a concept wasn't as definite as it is in the EU period - so they most likely thought of themselves as 'Knights of Christendom' first and foremost and 'French' a distinct (and distant) second.

The Templars then went on to recruit anyone who could make a noticeable contribution to the order in terms of power and influence. Certainly many Englishmen joined the order, and many Scotsmen as well - the Sinclair family were major players by all accounts.

And in pure game terms, it would be nigh-on impossible to mount any sort of effective anti-Moslem campaign from a base of The Highlands without some kind of bonus in terms of cultural spread throughout Europe.

The first grand master, Hughes de Payens, married a Scotswoman, Katherine St. Clair. A later St. Clair built Rosslyn Chapel ( fascinating place ) and is buried under a slab whose carvings identify him as a Knight Templar. Another St.Clair was the first Grand Master of the Masons in Scotland.

The Templars were never persecuted in Scotland because Robert the Bruce had been excommunicated by the pope. And there are reports that a group of Templars fought for Scotland at Bannockburn ( I think ).

The Templars in Spain and Portugal changed the name of their order and carried on - Prince Henry the Navigator, Vasco da Gama and Christopher Columbus ( whose ships had Templar patee crosses on their sails ) are usually acknowledged to have been members of the Templar orders.

Supposedly the Templar treasure and fleet ( listed sometimes as 18 ships at La Rochelle ) disappeared the night before the arrests ( King Phillip of France ordered all Templars and supporters - some 2000 - rounded up on Friday 13, 1307 ).

Sites and info on the Templars abound, from straight fact to rants on how the Templars influence NASA, so be careful with what you believe.

Huh? The Tutonic Order and the Swordbrothers were already old orders when the Templars were dissolved.

Beware all ye who seek the Truth of the Templars - as the pendulum swings so does the headsman´s axe. Remember the fate of three Italian editors who conspired to closely to the One Conspiracy.

Havard, I was wondering about your Avatar. Golden cross over silver shield ?
Is it a selfmade one ? Hum... You cannot put metal on metal, nor color on color. It's the rule number one in heraldic science, just a question of visibility on a battlefield.

;)
Bah! If it's good enough for the Pope and the King of Jerusalem it's good enough for me!

It's based on the alledged battle banner of St. Olav, patron saint of Norway. I know it's not correct heraldric, but ... ;)

Hmm..come to think of Roger Moore in his reincarnations as Simon Templar and Brett Sinclair (St.Clair) ..:D;)

Wasa, aren't you the ever abundant source of info? :D

Looking at my schedule ahead, and considering that I'm already deep into the Denmark AAR, I think this one will start in about two or three weeks.

:)

I'm away one weekend and this thread has turned into two pages... ;)
