Hi everyone, I have some problems running the EU3 demo. It's extremely slow.
Even if I have all the right requirements.

Now, I made a seperate post, because i managed to run Medieval II Total war and Hitman Blood Money with my NVIDIA GEFORCE 5600XT card.
How? Disabling the pixelshaders, it boooooosts performance extremely much.

But I don't know how to edit it in EU3, could someone help me?

I don't mind graphics at all, to be honest, I would've prefered that paradox sticked to 2D forever.

Well, it used to be a requirment for Hitman Blood Money tto, but i didn't really turn it off, i changed the quality to medium, (it was on high) and then it runned perfectly.

I have the same problem than you with the demo, it's extremely slow and unplayable. Anyway, I don't think it's because of our video card. How much RAM do you have? I have 512, and I think this is the main reason why it's unplayable.

The GeForce 5200 FX is at the lower end of the supported range. As long as you have recent drivers, it should work.

You don't disable or enable it -- your card either supports it, or not. All GeForces in the FX ("5000") series and up support PS2.0 or higher.

Thanks a lot man, it's good to hear it. Then, I'm pretty sure it's so slow because of the RAM memory. I'll have to buy another 512 one. It's the most that I can do, because I don't think my Pentium 4 2,00 Gb is not good enough, although it is too in the lower range.

Yes i have 512 MB RAM too.
I might want to upgrade it too.

If you look at the memory used, when you play the demo it uses about 700 Mb (at least in my case). In the requirements of the game says 1Gb is highly recommended.

Dionysios II said:
Oh yes, and it's possible to adjust the quality of the pixelshaders, as i did it twice...

Via the NVIDIA settings panel? Where?

The GeForce 5200 FX is actually a very weak performance card so it might be the main source of the slowdowns in EU3, not the PC ram.

You can maximize the available ram on your PC by closing down any programs you have running like ICQ, MSN and such as each program takes some ram to run so closing them will give more free ram for EU3 to use.

But it has 128 Mb... what I need, a supercard? I can't afford to buy a new graphics card... so if it's like you say, I'll have to say goodbye to EU3. :( And I'm afraid for Paradox that I'm not the only one with these kind of problems.

I close all the programs, including anti-virus. But it doesn't work either.

No, via the inc. file in blood Money, and probably using the settings file here.
That means it's a per game setting.

EU3 needs PS2.0, and that's it. There won't be a way to turn it off; the use of PS2.0 is a requirement, not an option.

The ram is not the main speed of the card...ram on the graphic card stores some of the information from the game, the processor in the gfx card then works with that information. Because its a 5200 FX you have, the processor on that is very weak so the information the ram handles are done slowly = game runs slowly. The faster processsor on graphic card, the faster the games will run, especially 3D intensive games needs good processor. The more RAM the graphic card has, the more informaton it can store in the 3D card to be handled by the processor.

Keep in mind that the 5200 is designed with the intent of making a cheap, consumer level card that is capable of DX9 applications (such as Pixel Shader 2.0). This does not mean it will push DX9 apps well, but simply means that the user will not get an error returned saying the hardware is incompatible.

I bought this card 3 years ago, so I suppose right now it's like prehistorical... oh my god, I've been following EU3 since it was developed, but I have to start saying goodbye to it after all this time... :( What a great deception, you can't imagine. 2007 seems not to be my best year...

Like mentioned above, the GPU (or graphics processing unit) is the most important attribute of a video card. The FX5000 series has a really slow processor compared to newer video cards as well as fewer vertex & pixel shaders (another measure of a video card's power, more important than memory) meaning that while it will allow you to run the game, you'll get really bad performance.

So, the problem does not lie with RAMs, it lies with the video card and its above mentioned attributes. To solve this performance issue, either buy a new and more powerful card, or hope paradox releases a patch that can seriously scale down the graphics in the game so that you can run it with your current card.

Thanks man, I'll look for video card prices, but I don't think there's any acceptable one less than 60-80 €, so I suppose EU3 is over to me.

I don't think Paradox is very likely to release a patch that allows to a lot of fans of EU series that have a weak PC to run EU3. And I completely understand this. If I had a powerful PC and could play EU3 without problems I didn't give anything about the others. Well, anyway, thanks for your help.

I think there are a chance. Because in others games that requires pixel shader 2.0, the modders have created a mod that simulate it (like oblivion, I think). This mod let nvidia 3 and 4 series, for example, play this game.

For this reason, I hope the same mod will be developed by modders. If this mod is created will be a success mod, sure.
