Will it be playable? It is not listed as one of the unplayable merchant states yet it was one of the big merchant states early on in the CK period.:)

I think that we could have endless discussions here in the Forum as to who will be playable..but, until Paradox says something more about the game..no one knows for sure.
I feel that the question about free cities have been brought up several times in several threads, IMO Pisa should be an important free city, playable or not..;)

I think its rather clear... You can play Emperor, King and Independent Duke. Period.:D Thus Pisa? Nope.

I suppose that would go for Amalfi, Sorrento, Genoa and Venice in Italy as well. But some cities switched between Duchies and Republics, e.g. Milan. I suppose they should be playable...

Only Duchies that start the scenario as Independent....

Ok, understood, so that would be the game equivalents of
Salerno, Bonavento, Spoleto, Ancona, Norman states under Guiscardo, the holdings of the Este/Obertinghi, the holdings of the Canossas, the holdings of the Savoys and Carinthia with vassals, plus or minus a couple depending on the scale of the map ;)
Milan would be playable as through the Estes...

Thanks. I wasn't thinking about it being an independent Duchy only that it was not mentioned as one of the merchant states.

Those republics that were listed were probably only examples. There were plenty more republics around at the time (Pisa, Iceland, Jamtland, etc.)

The other three were mentioned as merchant republics which Iceland and Jamtland are not. But Pisa was - so I just wondered if it was playable without thinking that it was not a kingdom or duchy. Silly me.:)

Hmm...As I said in some other post....RL Feudalism hierarchy was a mishmash created from an ideal situation changed by 'Realpolitik'. Now in a game we need a stringent and doable system thus we will use a three tier Ideal system. This means that a powerless dynasty officially titled duch or even a Petty King will be treated as a Count. Thus not playable.:D

Will these minor dukes and petty kings have their RL titles even though they are not treated as dukes or kings in game play?:)

(See, no matter how much you tell us we want more.;) )

The problem with that approach is the difference in use of titles in different places, I heard somewhere that there were around 300 dukes in Sicily...

I can't see the problem since these will all be "powerless dynasties officially titled duchies" and thus not treated on the same level as the "real" dukes...

Edit: I guess you was replying to Sonny... well, then I agree with you :D

Pisa disn't officially become a Republic until a bit after 1066, same thing goes for Genoa. The three republics I know to officially exist in 1066 in Italy were Imola, Venice and San Marino. Pisa and Genoa were only de facto free from their feudal rulers (in Genoa's case a bishop-count) However it will be very strange for them not to modelled in the game as anything less than Republics
