I end up with dozens of tiny fleets scattered across my empire patroling or just camping on trade routes. It clutters up my Outliner tab something fierce and closing my military fleets section makes it harder to do anything with my main fleets. So suggestion: please let us flag fleets as "patrol fleet" by clicking on a new "flag as patrol fleet" button next to the "patrol" button.

This would have no gameplay effect other than moving these fleets to their own separate tab in my Outliner - "Patrol Fleets" which i could minimize and forget about. You should probably let us pick if we want the fleets flagged that way, but you could have it be set up so any fleet that is "patrolling" would automatically count as a "patrol fleet", though I would prefer to choose because sometimes i just camp single corvettes somewhere and that works better than actually patrolling.

I haven't played much yet, but I built a couple of hangar bay starbases in the spots where pirates tended to grow strong, and now it's safe enough without patroling.

sure that works if your empire is small, but when you have massive trade routes all over the place, you can´t build enough starbases to protect them. honestly, the other solution that i think would be logical is to let defence platforms count as pirate supression, as that would be like putting mini starbases in the system. but I get that an immobile defence platform might not stop pirates since they can just sort of stay away from them. Maybe if defence platforms with hangers worked to suppress pirates, this would be a viable alternative that wouldnt cost you fleet points and clutter up your UI.

If you upgrade the starbases and build more hangar bays, the protection will spread farther and farther. I now have half the (large) galaxy in my empire and only need two trade protection fleets due to upgraded starbases covering everything else. But I agree with you that a separate tab for the patrol fleets would be really great, especially in the beginning when you need them more.
