Add a pilot respec, it's needed badly. I accidently made my main character level pilot instead of gut cus I wasn't paying attention and thought he was my flanker...

This basically broke the build of my main character. There needs to be a pilot respec, especially considering that i'm 17 hours in and I can't find a way to edit the save files.

I'd atleast suggest making it difficult, or expensive, to respec people but cmon. This is stupid, and has borderline ruined my campaign. I don't want to restart (losing 17 hours) but at the same time my main character is now useless.

Does your PC have to be in every mission? even if outclassed by other pilots? Is it possible for him to manage the fight behind a keyboard and mouse?

Your PC doesn't play in MP matches, and you don't know the stats of the other pilots in SP. So, if your PC has a dedicated role (lets say medium flanker) then yes, he will most likely be in all your missions except the sparse capture base ones or so-forth.

But by re-rolling we end up with the best of both worlds!!! its not 17 hours wasted unless I did not enjoy playing those 17 hours... When I watch a good movie, is that 2-3 hours wasted? if so then I doubt I will find real satisfaction from any form of instant gratification. I do not want any dev effort spent on a re-roll. Maybe share where to go edit it for those that absolutely must know how and like to cheat.... I say Cheat because there is a MP element.

Some of us don't have 17 hours to spare.

Punishment would be good just to balance it out and to ensure the fact its not heavily exploited.

I do agree with the heavy meta change in late game though, makes my PC's skills very non-functional now. I mean, they *work* but not up to par anymore.
Punishment is really the wrong word to use here. Is it "punishment" that it costs XP to improve your skills? If we're not splitting hairs here, I think we can all agree it costs XP to "change" your skills. I see no reason why it can't cost XP to improve them the same as it would be to change them. In the end, you would still have to put more work into changing your skill set than if you had stuck with the same skills from the beginning. That seems like a pretty good reflection of reality to me.

I also disagree with Lynx's comparison to movies on the basis that I have little interest in replaying the earlier portion of the game for the single purpose of rebuilding my character. To experience the story over, sure. But that is not my goal, nor my interest in this matter (maybe later when the story is less fresh in my mind). Imagine any scenario where in order to fully enjoy the game, you had to restart half way through. That is not fun. The way I see it, it is a ridiculous argument that allowing me to respec (in a reasonable manner) is somehow detracting from someone else's single player experience.

Some of us post while waiting for reports to run or answers to come back on emails... while the game is loading or during the unskippable animations for intersystem travel... etc.

Punishment may have been a slightly misleading term there, yeah. I think I meant punishment more in the sense that if you choose to respec, you should be outted for a certain amount of time or it should cost a certain amount of more XP than normal. That way you can't simply respec your PC anytime you feel like you want him to have a different role, as in "hmm well my front-liner just died... so lets respec my PC to change from a striker to a lancer, and once I get another lancer ill just change him back".

I enjoy the concept that the skills you assign are more "permanent" in the sense that they can be changeable, but it's something that should have consideration behind it, not just being able to do it on a whim. Having your PC taken out of action for a month or so, or having the XP costs increased, or whatever the devs should decide to do. Aslong as respeccing isn't something you can do simply whenever, wherever, for whatever reason.

Yeah, I didn't mean to sound like I was nit picking. I just figured it was not the ideal term I'd use if I didn't want to freak other people out. You are basically describing a reasonable amount of XP cost for changing things... to which I totally agree. In every RPG I've ever played, I always appreciated the ability to "teach an old dog new tricks", but I would never expect a free pass on such an undertaking.

Exactly, as long as it's not something that's exploitable i'd love to see it added.

Definitely adding a Yes to be able to respec the PC only. As others have said, you can replace your regular pilots easily enough if you're not happy with their skill choices, but the PC is stuck even as the meta changes.

For those against it, you could, you know, not use it?

As someone who has now been retrained for four careers and is only in his mid-30s, I find it odd to suggest retraining at least your main character for slight variances in combat style when his/her/their life depended on it recieves so much opposition.

Yes, absolutely retrain your commander, even if it costs XP or time or whatever.
