Gridley-class destroyer (USN)

How to find it in 5 min:
fire director above bridge -> USN
single smoke stack, modern turrets -> late war
go here and search through list in big steps -> found somewhere beyond the mahan-class

Nice work :). Technically it's Mugford, a Bagley, but given the two were near-identical visually when commissioned I'd be being a bit tough to not give that :).

One for overnight, I think I might expand the scope to all ships that served in the period that are represented by ship types in HoI4, rather than just those around at the start. Not just because I've broken that rule a couple of times already, but it does means some interesting later ships get a run, and I can use this pic :).

This BB unusually had torpedo tubes added to it during the war (I think the only BB I can recall this happening to, at least that I've been through so far).

German , admiral Hipper class? Is it Prinz Eugen. A ship who survived the war and while a war prize ship in the USN survived atomic bomb tests at bikini atoll .
Prinz Eugen was a CA with torpedo tubes from the beginning, the question is about a BB that received torpedo tubes in a refit during the war.

The big bulges at the side of the funnel are not visible on Prinz Eugen (see here).
But Tirpitz has them (see here and here).
Also Prinz Eugen had only one DP-turret forward/near the funnel.

Wikipedia says (for Tirpitz): "After 1942, eight 53.3 cm (21.0 in) above-water torpedo tubes were installed."

So it should be Tirpitz.

I'm not big on boats like some guys earlier in this thread, but when it comes to boats I do recognize Tirpitz and Blücher for obvious reasons. Too bad this beauty had to hide away in dock the entire war, but considering the fate of it's sister ship I can understand the reluctance.

Yes it is Tirpitz.

The strong family resemblance to the Hipper heavy cruisers and the general resemblance to Scharnhorst was partly because they were designed by the same people and partly intentional. During the first minutes of the Battle of the Denmark Strait, Hood opened fire on Prinz Eugen, mistaking that ship for Bismarck.

You can see the same strong family resemblance in the profiles of American Baltimore and Cleveland cruisers with the North Carolina, South Dakota and Iowa class battleships. There is a somewhat weaker but still present resemblance between the British rebuilt battleships and battlecruisers (Queen Elizabeths, Renown and Repulse), the KGVs and the County-class heavies. Mostly this is just a product of the designers of that generation working on all of the ships, but sometimes there is a desire to mislead.

Well Tirpitz'd all :). While they weren't the best BBs on the waves, and were a tad inefficient, I've always liked the lines of the Bismarck class. Could clearly take a fair bit of punishment as well!

This particular shot is inspired by a suggestion from Director - this ship served in WW2 in a capacity that is covered by HoI4's units, but not in the form shown in this picture (that's the clue :)).....

IJN Chitose?

Spot on, that's Chitose as a Seaplane Carrier on trials in 1938, nice work :).

Edit: And as JamesD rightly points out, it makes the cut for this thread because it and its sister-ship were converted to CVLs after the CV losses of 1942.

I only recognized a couple of these, but am enjoying it immensely! Keep it up

Glad to hear, just thought it might be nice for a bit of fun while it's a quiet time with the team (and probably more than a few forumites) on a break :).

Here's another close-up shot, I don't have very many of these, but a little bit of a different angle on the ship recognition challenge. The clue for this picture, other than the uniforms the sailors are wearing, is that those are not 8-inch guns.....

Kirov (or Maxim Gorky) class Soviet cruiser? It had three turrets with triple 7.1" guns, so not 8". The Soviet Naval rifle brigades wore dark coats so the uniform seems to fit as well.

The Kirov it is, nice work :).

For the next one, we're going to get very historical. A vessel from the class of the pictured vessel (but not the pictured vessel specifically) saw combat (and survived!) during WW2, and is large enough to be covered by the game's units, but it's so old that some poetic license is likely to be necessary (there's your clue :)).

Komintern? Was thinking of Izumo but it had twin turrets instead of single as seen in the picture.

Komintern survived encounters with German bombers while Izumo survived encounters with Chinese bombers and torpedo boats.

Right you both are, not much gets past you two :). By the look of it, she was bombed by the Germans twice, survived both encounters, then was withdrawn to Poti and expended as a breakwater for her trouble (although she was getting on a bit by then).

Here's another one that's a dash more modern (by a few decades!) The clue for this one is that this vessel carried both a live and dead head of state on it (not at the same time).

King Alexander I of Yugoslavia was assassinated on a state visit in France, and it's the destroyer Dubrovnik that carried him both ways.
