Think we are all using the same book :)

Ivan I never thought people would get that one, I have never heard of it before I found it in "the book".

I suspect the funnel and the arrangement of the guns poking out the sides gave it away, but it was definitely a pic worth sharing - nice idea Swinds .

Nice pic as well SchwarzKatze - bod's playing up and have a dash of insomnia, which I've just taken for and waiting for it to kick in, and it'll do nicely while it does. Hmmm... that rear turret placement is very distinctive.....

Ah - there's a post by 05060403, and I'd bet good money he's on the money - I'll go with the Dunkerque as well :).

Oh, is it a French Dunkerque class battleship? The rear turrets are really characteristic

Actually Strasbourg, though there's no visual difference so I consider you get it.

It turned up as I was searching for Ōyodo for some reason.

That's interesting, I actually had a thought there might be something Japanese about it because of the seaplanes (I deffo didn't get it instantly like 05060403), and was initially looking at Japanese cruisers (I didn't think it quite matched the Yamato or Nagato :)), and Oyodo was the one that had brought on the thought (although it clearly wasn't, funnel was all wrong).

Here's another easy one then I'm hopefully off back to sleep, hope you all enjoy the rest of your days :). A ship from this class survived a Kamikaze attack that hit the deck, with flight operations resuming just 30 minutes later....

I checked and it seems a bit scary. The "mistaked" result is a page with French capital ships only, no mentioning of any ships beside French battleships and carriers, yet Goggle somehow thinks they're related. They are indeed visually similar: two superfiring turrets in the front, a single funnel between the masts, and a seaplane hangar in the back. It's a rather human mistake as no text nor caption could led to it, could it be that Google developed a functioning AI "recognizing" the images?

It's definitely more plausible than Google keeping hundreds (thousands?) of humans underground in captivity manually answering web queries all day :). That is a right peculiar thing though, as you say - although I'm not sure they're quite close enough for image recognition to not be turning up other odd results if that was the case - but as you say, it's unlikely to be a text-related error. Quite puzzling :).

That would be the USS Lexington, the Lady Lex, converted from a Battlecruiser due to the Treaty of Washington (or London, I forget which). She has a sister, the USS Saratoga.

Not a bad guess by any means, but I'm afraid that's not the ship. Here's the Saratoga for comparison (I know, any excuse for a ship pic ;)). There is a reason I picked that particular Allied CV, as it's one of the the only ones where there's much in the way of ambiguity between the classes.....

One of the Illustrious class? Beside Illustrious itself, all other 3 shrugged off at least one kamikaze that hit the deck.

Nice work all :). It's HMS Implacable, picked because the similarites between the Implacables, Indomitables and Illustrious class make them a little harder to pick than your average CV. This pic is Implacable at around 1953.

Here's another one, this class had an unfortunate war history, with this particular example being accounted for by a torpedo.

A De Reyter ?
The appearence and the fact of it being torpedoed looks correct, but it's a class of 1 so either you're not exactly right or Axe99 was being deceptive:p

It was indeed a De Ruyter, will picked :). I don't think I was 'incorrect' in my wording, but I was deliberately obtuse to avoid making it clear it was a class of one and making it too easy (as there weren't many CAs/CLs that were a class of one, although there were a few) :).

Here's another :). No other class of destroyer during the period (at least from the major naval powers, haven't got through all the minors yet) had more torpedo tubes on them than this class (although there was another class that had the same number).... I've done a little photoshopping so it's not toooooo easy.

Judging from the non-centerline torpedo tubes after the second funnel, is that a Mahan?

And I don't know if that's a trick or honest mistake, but Shimakaze, a one ship class, had 15 centerline torpedo tubes, while a Mahan had only 4 centerline plus another 4 on each side for a total of 12.

Edit: Argh, complete brain explosion, posted a Mahan by mistake . Original post left below in case of potential confusion.

Original (INCORRECT) post: Deffo not a trick (I may present things carefully like with De Ruyter as to not give it away too easily, but I won't say anything deliberately false), but if my source is correct (and Wikipedia corresponds with my source, from different sources) then the pictured class had more than 15 tubes.

Double-post, in case Schwartzkatze misses an edit to the previous post.

My word I'm sorry - right you are. I got my wires crossed and posted a Mahan instead of what I intended. Here's the pic I meant to post, but got my wires crossed, much embarrassment, and thanks for setting me straight :).
