Yavuz aka SMS Goeben?

I don't think so, Moeltke class has only one fore turret, 2 midship, and two superfiring aft turrets. We need Axe to confirm Swinde and my answers.

The wind and backlight conveniently obfuscated the flags.

It's the only ship in its class to be built with a seaplane hangar and it was once sunk but was later restored to fighting condition again.

The Ning Hai?

I will give you guys this as i see that @Axe99 is offline :D
Clue: This ship now is a museum. Had participated in Operation Deadlight.

That is ORP "Błyskawica". I don't mean to be a jerk or something, but just because Axe is offline, you shouldn't post new ones. Few things that gave it away really fast: the part of the clue about being a museum. That was unnecessary, because it made this one too easy. Other thing that gave it away is the Polish symbol in the bottom-right corner.

Cheers for the words and appreciate the thought, but deffo don't worry about this, aim of the thread is to have a bit of fun with ships that were about in the period of the game, and the person posting the ship deffo doesn't need to be me :).

Not trying to offend Axe by posting, but can anyone pick this ship? Clue: it doesn't look like this during World War 2.

There'll be no offence here (and love the choice of ship) :), I just wanted to get it started and have a little fun, I definitely recommend others posting. The only thing I'd suggest is perhaps waiting until the previous ship that's been posted has been guessed (and my last was indeed Royal Sovereign :)) so it doesn't get too confusing for others reading the thread. One thing I was thinking is that it might help folk who are interested in looking at the ships without the guessing.

At the moment, we've got the landing ship from Swinds and the ship from Schwartzkatze, so I won't post another one just yet (but I will next time I'm here and see the thread doesn't have a ship :)) - feel free to ask them questions (yes and no only) if you're not sure what they are (and if they are sure what they are, pipe up and post :)). I'll re-post the two pics here so that people don't need to go back to the previous page.

Edit: I know the first, and don't want to give it away (given the research I've been doing, it feels a bit like cheating), but the second I can't recall, so the first question for Schwartzkatze - Was it built in Japan?

It must be the Chinese light cruiser Ning Hai. Both it and its sister ship Ping Hai were based on Japanese designs, hence the Japanese look. They were both sunk by aircraft by Japan and later refloated by Japan.

But this must be the Ning Hai, since the Ping Hai lacked the seaplane hangar.

I missed that Ivan_W_S had taken that guess already :)

That landing craft stumped me, need more clues, was it used by the Allies in Normandy?

I can give you a big no to that. Keep asking :).

I could only guess that it's a Japanese less-manufactured or late war landing craft, I can't tell why but it definitely look Japanese to me and it's not the daihatsu usually seen.

Ah, that narrows it down a lot, No. 101 landing ship

That's the one. Only reason I knew what it was, was because I was going through the Japanese navy about a week or so ago, and the book I'm going through had that exact same pic in it ;).

Here's another. One of these was effectively put out of commission by an MTB, and two in the class were hit by airborne torpoedoes....

Just look at all these ship nerds.

:p:p:p

Seriously all of you guessing these ships, you googled them or you really really know them lol?

Some I know from memory, the clues also helped a lot. Some I have to google to confirm my suspicions. Many have distinct shapes, so a bit easier to narrow down the ships. HMS Furious 18" gun was a dead giveaway, Wickes-class 4 funnels, Ning Hai's Japanese superstructure all give clues to identify the ships. But you need to have some idea on the ship's identity first before googling, like is it a battleship/light cruiser/destroyer, then which country operated the ships, and the knowing the ship's history also helps.

Here's another. One of these was effectively put out of commission by an MTB, and two in the class were hit by airborne torpoedoes....

I have my suspicions as I can only recall one major ship damaged by MTB so badly that it was scuttled. :D

Seriously all of you guessing these ships, you googled them or you really really know them lol?

Part of the idea of using pictures (and I'm making sure the filenames of the pictures are such that you'd have to be a bit of a freak to know what they meant, but bonus points to anyone that can work that one ;)) is so that there's some background knowledge required to get started. Like Ivan's said, some of the ships have characteristics that make them easier to pick than others. I was quite impressed that the KD-5 class sub was guessed so quick.

Isn't it the HMS Liverpool ?

It is indeed, in 1950, well after the other two in the class (Gloucester class light cruisers, a sub-class of the UK's Town class cruisers).

Think we used the same book Axe99 ;-)

Japanse landing craft, bit sneeky, T103 class landing ship, T149

Hahaha, we are indeed :). I'm pretty sure that's actually a T101 class, but I'm only as good as my source, particularly on this.

OK, off to get some kip again soon, so will leave you with what I think will be a tougher one to chew on (now watch someone get it in 5 minutes, lol :)). Flag and writing on hull smudged to not make it too easy. The clue is that it was designed in one country, built in another, outfitted by two yet other nations, and actually served in a fifth. Bonus points if you can name all five nations :).

Merry Christmas Eve everyone, and hope you all have a Happy Christmas if you're a Christmas person, and good Friday either way :).

I doubt I'm correct but I'll five it a Wild guess :p. Is it maybe a Yugoslavian destroyer Dubrovnik? It was commisioned for KSCS, built in Britain, outfitted with Czechoslovakian guns and ended up serving for the Italians and later on for the Germans. As I said I doubt I'm correct :p

I would guess a German 1936A Narvik-class destroyer. Then number would sugest it is Z24 :D

/Edit
On second thought, the shape of the bow sugests it is older...

Possibly a 1934 or 1934A Can't pin the exact ship though Since I obviously doesn't know how that numbering system works :p
