I don't actually think she met her end, more like a temporary vacation at the hands of a couple of tugboats on a sandbank.

HMS Illustrious send her Swordfish into, what most likely was a precursory "food for thought" to the planning of the Japanese attack on pearl harbour.

I think the hint about the planes and the fact that it sits in shallow water gives it squarely away. Couple that with the triple and dual gun turret on the front deck right in front of the bridge makes this undoubtedly the

That's the one, well deduced :). It was indeed a light cruiser, and comfortably the largest warship Australia had made up to that time.

Here's another battleship (I don't think that's giving too much away!) - this one (like more than a few) met it's end as a result of aerial attack....

Argh, I've got a bug today, although this does open up a new, devious way of using images from the web, by deliberately picking images that give false matches!

Caio Duilio, after Royal Navy's raid on Taranto harbour?

That was what I searched for, and at a cursory glance, it looked to be the one. Of course, as Ecid points out, it was neither Cuilio's or Cavour's end, that's just my brain fading....

I don't actually think she met her end, more like a temporary vacation at the hands of a couple of tugboats on a sandbank.

HMS Illustrious send her Swordfish into, what most likely was a precursory "food for thought" to the planning of the Japanese attack on pearl harbour.

Right you are, very nice work :) (Particularly given I flat-out misled you in the "clue" - whether it was the Duilio like I thought, or the Cavour, both were indeed refloated and repaired). I'm not sure about the smokestacks - from what I can see, both the Doria's and Cavour's had similarly small smokestacks after being modernised, but while it's a bit tricky to get a clear shot of the post-modernised bridge on the Duilio's, it looks pretty much like it's Cavour in that pic.

Here's another one (from the book this time, so no internets confusing me). As completed, this ship had 8" guns on it...

Unless I've been thrown another wobbly by my sources (which I don't think I have - I've had a look around on the internet and it generally supports what I can see), it's not the Akagi, but you are very close :).

Indeed. Name another two carrier classes completed with 8" guns or larger?

Lexington is one (I was looking for pictures of Lexington, and there were some nice ones of her 8" guns, but they were also dead giveaways so used something else), can't think of the other off the top of my head (and it'd be cheating to hit the spreadsheets).

I would say Kaga as well without actually looking it up.
As far as the 8" guns go, if I recall, they carried such large caliber guns because all three (four including Sara) were converted in the 1920's when their aircraft were short ranged bi-planes so the chance of being intercepted by a cruiser were much greater than in the actual time frame of the game.

Kaga then? Pretty sure she also had that weird multi-deck layout when first built.

Aye, Kaga's the one, nice worl :). The pic is when completed before she was modernised and had the island put in. Akagi looked like this at a similar time (and also carried 8 inch guns - does that make three Director, or were you thinking of another one?):

C179B.jpg

Not a lot between them by any stretch.

Here's another one, this vessel was unique for it's nation, in that it was specifically designed to be able to be a minelaying submarine, as well as perform other submarine roles.

V4 Argonaut, picture taken some time after modernisation in 1940. picture is probably 1942/43 - by that time she served as a cargo submarine before sunk in early 1943 by the japanese.

this is a clearer picture of her in 1927 (when she was still a purposebuild mine layer.):

The main hint is that it served with two countries. Second hint is that she is the leader of it's class.

Edit: I'm assuming Axe's sub was succesfully guessed.

Edit 2: uploading from cellphone doesn't seem to work. But don't despair! I'll retry in a few hours when I return home.

That is the HMS P611. You can tell by the fact that the failure to post a proper picture is kinda a synonym for the achievements of the Oruç Reis that together with her brethren (P612, P614 and P615 ) never amounted to much, neither with the British nor the Turkish navies.

In fact when challenged in combat, the P614 managed managed to fire 4 Torpedos at U-408 in the arctic, despite missing with all 4 torpedos, but in tradition to the hubris exhibited by this class totally assumed it hit the opposing sub (because what else could it have done, it is the Oruc Reis CLass) and turned tail. Later it's commander was rewarded a DSO for this "acheivement", while her sister then managed to get her self sunk by U-123, not having noticed it was under torpedo attack for roughly 6 hours and 30 minutes - despite being escorted by a minesweeper - before finally being struck, sunk and totally forgotten about 100 miles sw of freeport.

Also, waaaaay to many hints and a sub following a sub made this even easier.

Actually, I had in mind the Lexington class -

And IJN Ise and Hyuga, rebuilt and thus 'completed' with flight decks, hangars and 14" guns.

But Kaga was built on a different hull from Akagi and is therefore a separate class.

Tell me that at least you can see the uploaded pic in your PC (because I can't in my phone). If that's not the case, please tell me that you hacked my phone or you phisically saw me writing the post, I'll gladly believe that way sooner than you guessing the sub with that ease.

Ps: funny response btw

Its what happend to that class and its ships. In the grand scheme of things it probably was one of the most worthless sub-classes out there during ww2. never accomplished anything but driving around in circles before being sunk/scrapped.
