King Alexander I of Yugoslavia was assassinated on a state visit in France, and it's the destroyer Dubrovnik that carried him both ways.

You're a machine (I thought that one would take a tiny bit longer, very impressive) :).

Here's my last for the day, and potentially (if you don't know the pic, if you do, likely a bit easier) a trickier one. The class/ship to identify is the one in the foreground, and the clue is that if ships were rated on their ability to play poker, both of those in the picture would probably be pretty good at it.....

Actually it's the hint that gave it away. There were few HoS dying in somewhere far from home, necessitating a destroyer for transport, and a destroyer instead of something more grandeur transporting both a living and a dead HoS implies it's not a major naval power, and it's a short list from there on.

Aye, I ummed and arred a bit about that, but thought it was too good a clue in terms of interesting anecdote to not run with. I still think you did well to get it so quickly, I'm not sure how I'd start searching for something like that, and outside of the majors (and a few minors like Australia and New Zealand) I'm not up on many Heads of State and what they got up to. How'd I go with the clue for the next picture, more obtuse? :).

no, way too obtuse

OK, to make things easier, both ships in the picture are the same class (don't expect this for every picture, but this picture even has a range of difficulties to it :)).

Is the small secondary gun, between the barrels of the main gun and the funnel in the picture, not part of its standard configuration? It looks way too big to be a machine gun, too big to be a 4", and no ship with a 3" looks like that. It's gotta be a Hotchkiss 3 pounder unless it's signature stock is actually not unique. Apparently I confused the secondaries on St.Louis and South Carolina in my memory and looked for 3 incher instead of 3 pounder. Though wasn't it obsolete long before WWII?

Could it be a Leander? Here's a picture of a model of HMAS Perth, a modified Leander. Other Leanders had single funnel unlike this one so that's accounted for. If the picture was taken from the deck by the aft portside anchor as seen here, and a boat was stored behind the portside secondary, obscuring it from the photo (maybe the angular thing on the top left of the boat is the gun's shield instead of part of the boat?)

You're on the ball again :). The Hotchkiss three-pounder was indeed no longer used in a military capacity, at least on front-line RN ships, during WW2 (although it pops up on some trawlers, corvettes and other smaller vessels). However, most larger RN vessels built before WW2 (it looks like a few years before WW, when they presumably decided they needed to focus on installing guns required for fighting and not ceremony, they stopped bunging them on everything from a CL up - the Ark Royal had them, but the KGVs didn't) carried 4 3pdr guns for saluting purposes. I think a lot of the cruisers and other vessels lost their three-pounders early in the war - so for bonus points, what was my (now clearly ridiculously obtuse) clue referring to (I think it should be fairly straightforward to work out, but more clues available on request :))?

The ships in the picture are most definitely Leanders, Achilles and Ajax (Ajax is one of the few ships I'd heard of before I really got into military simulations, at least I think, so is at least fairly 'known' in some circles), and I wanted to get a pic of them in, but the Leanders funnel is crazy distinctive (and they were the only single-funneled RN cruiser built during WW1 or WW2, so a shot that showed the ship with clearly one funnel would have been only marginally more subtle than posting a front-on picture of an Iowa :)) - here's a full-body shot of Ajax:

Edit: PS - that's a very nice looking model of HMS Perth :).

Sounds like I should pop another ship up? Didn't want to keep flogging a dead horse if no-one interested, but I've got lots more where they came from (even if I was just taking from the book I'm looking at, at the moment, which I'm not :)). OK, something that I think will be easy for the fans of this particular navy amongst us, but which I'd have to rely on the caption for - all of the vessels in this shot are the same class, and were all launched before the Washington Naval Treaty came into effect....

Colorado class

Right you are, nice work :). I definitely wouldn't want to be on the other end of three of them opening up!

One for overnight, this one may not be what it appears to be at first glance....

You mean it's not an Argentine cruiser?!

Hahahaha, it is indeed :). But were folk not familiar with the Argentinian Navy, it could be mistaken for a Trento without too much trouble.

Almirante Brown Veinticinco de Mayo-class cruiser

It's actually Vienticino De Mayo (at least according to the caption, I wouldn't know the difference visually myself), but I'd say that's easily close enough, and you got the class spot on :).

Here's the next one - this ship came to grief, in part, by torpedoes that were not launched from a submarine, boat/ship or aircraft......

I assume that's not Alexandria in the background, ruling out HMS Queen Elizabeth and the others attacked by the Italians there

It's not, but that's a very good guess, I'd forgotten about those Italian Frogmen and their crazy ride-on torpedoes while I was writing that :).

Blücher, attacked by land based torpedos and cannons named Aron & Moses.

Right you are, very appropriately guessed by someone with a Norwegian flag as their avatar :).

I quite like the look of this ship, but struggling to find an interesting clue for it (that's not a dead giveaway). This one's a bit obtuse (but given the shot of the ship, and the knowledge of people in these parts, I doubt this one will take too long to guess) but clearly this ship's looks weren't just appreciated by me, as this vessel in particular (as well as two of her sisters) cost a British Admiral Dudley North his job...
