Patching is not optional in Steam, therefore there will be no beta patches, but more smaller patches. Beta patches are experimental changes to be tested. Thus making beta patches mandatory, you are forcing people to accept untested changes. Simply put, current beta patches system is a no-go for an automatic update system.
And due to checksums and multiplayer issues, there will be no difference in patching between various versions. You will just have more smaller patches and there will be no significant difference where you bought it.

Steam patches install to the game folder in steamapps, If you empty the folder it will redownload the entire game+the beta patch
This is how it will work
Please confirm re GamersGate if the answer is that the beta set of files is available only if I have a separate Steam installation of the game on another machine and Copy the files over? Or is that not possible (or is not permitted between two licensed copies)?
There are no "beta files". User who activated their game in Steam will get access to two versions of the game, the normal game and a beta game. Both are separated and can be played and installed separated but are only available if you have the steam game verision.
The context was the discussion in preceding posts - maybe I should spell it out.
Question: Is it impossible for a player to beta patch a GamersGate CK2?
I recently learned that beta patches will not be posted in the forums. They are only available to Steam versions of the game and it is clear how that works - see above.)
But, based on ideas above, if I have a GG installation on desktop and a Steam installation on laptop, can I beta patch the GG installation by copying over the Steam CK2 beta installation files on the laptop to my GG installation on the desktop? Or could I do this but would need to use Steam on the desktop as well to copy?
Or is there another way?
That said, beta patches are expected to have a short lifetime and official versions for GG will likely not ever be far behind.
