Ill do the south states if thats ok. 211-355 or something like that ive only glanced at this point
I think it might be better to download the thing, work on my bit of it and then post just that bit rather than edit the thing everyone else is on. As i guess then youd have to be online to do anything and also if you started before someone else and saved after you might nullify their work. [Although i have no idea how this works at all.]

Is it just the spreedsheeting or if you do something on the spread sheet do you have to recolour too? as im not entirely sure whats meant by that, the CK2 colour for that province number or something?. But the spreedsheeting seems clear enough.

For the doc, anybody can edit at the same time. It doesn't do saving in the traditional way, so multiple people can be changing the document at once. You just have to ask for permission so that I can give it.

Each province is keyed to a certain RGB color, each of which is unique. The entire province map that we have has to be recolored to fit definitions.csv. Right now, I'm going through and recoloring New England and the rest of the US. I'm not clear on whether or not we could construct our own definitions.csv to make it easier, so I'm just using the default one right now, which is a slow process. I could whip up a python script to create a new one that makes coloring easier (more obvious changes between consecutive provinces would be the main thing), but that creates the problem of distributing it, among other things. In short, the entire map has to be recolored, which is what I was hoping to get help with, along with province names and other information.

California, as such, doesn't exist in this mod. The closest we get is the northern end of the Gulf of California, which still lies completely within Mexico. So, no, there won't be a Californian culture, sorry.

I see. That's unfortunate, would you consider adding California in the future? It is/would be one of the fruit/agricultural breadbaskets of the USA and has many area/possibilities for post-apocalyptic lore.

Thanks for replying! :)

California and the West Coast are being used as the India/China/Timbuktu of this setting, as the rich and powerful land over the mountains and where the mongol equivalent will come from.

EDIT : Im going to start naming, culture and duchying the provinces from the mississippi east in the south provinces 210-355ish

Unfortunately, given how the map-making process works, it would be almost impossible to add California in at this point without a massive amount of work. A little of it along the southern coast could have been (and may yet be) included in the mod, but I agree with others who didn't want to include it for a variety of reasons discussed back up in the thread a bit.

No problem about replying. The work that has to be done right now is incredibly tedious, and so it's nice to have an excuse to take a break.

EDIT: Uh-oh. Mass Effect 3 just went on sale on Impulse. There's a small chance that A)my wallet will become lighter and B) I won't get much work done for a bit. Probably not, but my resolve might weaken.

I couldnt work out how to ask for permission so i just uploaded what ive been working on in Open Office Calc separately here
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ag3L8vwBbhqOdEh2aU9aNmF4dHRsVWNMVDh4Z2xOY3c#gid=0
Only alittle bit of louisiana is done and not final copyish in the least
Im not entirely confidant on the scale or the placement, as it seems maps that have names on them dont have rivers and maps that have rivers dont have names so im mostly guessing, but as its all just a spreadsheet no worries. Also the numbers are just as far as i dragged it down, im just planning on east of texas, south of the Empire at the moment. Im thinking southern 'alabama' wont have map names but tribal or bibical ones, and probably for final version principle cities, towns or rivers will suppliant modern county/subdivision names, but its having a name there matters more than having a perfect name so no worries.
On the assumption that close colours on the map are potential duchies ive split one of them between two others to make them more varied. One of the Coast, one Inland instead of two on the coast and one inland all with three provinces. And if the inland one starts off split between the Kingdom and Republic then itll promise conflict.

I'll be going through and coloring all the provinces, which is a somewhat long process. I find it's easy to get into a rhythm and pump a lot out. So if you're planning on helping with province coloring, please say so now so I know what I have to do.

As for accessing the document, I think you click on the "Share" button in the upper right, but since I think you need a Google Account I can't really check it (as my only account is the one that created it). I asked for permission to view your doc, by the way.

I can name the Maritime provinces easily if you need help with that. Also I haven't been following this mod as attentively as I want because I'm busy but have you considered having a de jure empire for New England and the Maritimes (and maybe Newfoundland) calling it Nova Britannia or something like that?

If you want to help with naming, feel free to ask for permission on the google doc I posted up above.

As for de jure empires, I'm not sure what Orinsul has in mind. My involvement up to this point has mostly been with map creation (which we are nearing the end of).

sorry i assumed that it would be public by default so never thought to check. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Ag3L8vwBbhqOdEh2aU9aNmF4dHRsVWNMVDh4Z2xOY3c its show visible to anyone who has a link so anyone ought be able to see it. Basically im not convinced Baton Rouge is in the right place but other than that thats basically what im doing from where i started east to the coast.

For Empires, what i think the idea was that the Maritimes would be split between the USA and the potential Canadian. But now that top tiers, Kingdoms and presumably empires can press de jure claims for themselves [as of the last patch DD] its probably best not to give it de jure incentive to push north so it might all just be under the Canada Imperial title [which wont be called canada thats just where it mostly is so a good working title], Generally were going for one empire per religion as with CK2.
Congressional - The United States [HRE]
Provisional - The Presidency [ERE]
Crusader - Mexican Empire [Caliphate]
Latin - A Name no ones thought up yet [HRE]
Judicial - Canada [Caliphate]
Fourth Wave - Sunset Horde [GH] or something cool as the Illkhanate.
Then the Southern Crusade or Southern Alliance or Expeditionary force or something as a latin mongol invasion from the south of the map to represent the reconquers if south america falls to the congressionals or heresy.
Either the Latin or the Illkhante one might be called the Federation/Federacion as its a good name and they dont have names yet.

Where are the northern states? I'd be happy to fill it out for Indiana, Ohio and Michigan.

Just refer to the province number map I posted back a ways, and ask for permission to edit the Google Doc.

Also, make a note somewhere in the doc that you edited it, and what you edited. Hopefully at the end we can give credit to everyone who helped out.

EDIT: Also, when I was fixing the map to put the one province back in Canada, I accidentally mislabeled it as 387, instead of 377. The only province in Canada with a 3 digit ID should be 377, not 387.

A couple of questions:

1) Do you want to create to multiple different sheets at the bottom for the different regions like Canada and the Caribbean?

2) Should we have different cultures reflecting anglophones and francophones in Canada? Or should we assume they have assimilated into one culture a la Chiac http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chiac

3) Should I have corruptions of current names for the places in-game or assume they stayed the same after the end of the world?

1) The document I posted has different sheets for Canada, US, Mexico, etc.
Here it is again.

2) You'll have to ask Orinsul. I'd say that there should be two different cultures, but he would know better than I would.

3)For right now, I'd put down the modern name that the future corruption would be based off. Did that make sense? Okay, so presumably the future name will be roughly based off of a modern name. Since we haven't worked out exactly how the names will be corrupted, put down the modern name and we can mess with it later. For the very few provinces that I've done, I haven't used the biggest city from the province most of the time. I've used features such as national parks and middling-sized towns (figuring that few big cities from today will survive into the 31st century after an apocalypse). The exception to that would be massive cities such as New York, Chicago, Montreal, etc. (I'm thinking anything with populations nearing 500,000 - 1 million).

I was thinking three cultures for canada, Maritime, Quebecois and another for the area around the great lakes from indiana up. The Quebecois possibly in a culture group all of their own and speaking a language developed from french, maybe even its own religion to represent an isolationist identity.

With the names eventually there will be language drift but before you can do that you need a foundation to drift it from. Probably the important towns now wont be the important towns then, with smaller or brand new towns growing and current ones fading away.
Some will be the names of places in the province, others the names of the tribe or nation that held the ground during the ash ages or the hero who united the peoples there and gave his name to the county or the etc.contemporaries called it. Ulrichs ideas for getting there are pretty good.
The other route is to not use in-setting names, CK2 generally uses the modern english name for a place, not the place the locals or

But whichever way it goes, the first step is to give out names to have a grounding to make sense of it and work from.

1) It won't let me edit that spreadsheet however. I'll PM you my email so you can give me editing powers if you want of course.

2) Ok I'll await a response

3) I'll keep some major cities in the area just because they are either a) highly centrally located or b) very strategically located (ie along bays or rivers and such).

Edit: I'm apparently a slow typer.
