AFAIK, Septimius Severus was born in Leptis Magna, in Africa. He came from a rich local family (but I don't know if it was a family of Roman colones or a North African family). His second wife, Julia Domna, was from Syria.

Hey, it seems that I was discovered...yes I am a fraud, with a very bad memory, also :(

What I was going to suggest (poorly, may I add) is that every emperor was culturally, socially, politically Roman...arab by the standard of birth, but that was all...cursus honorum counted the most...

I very much agree.

Certainly by the 3rdC the concept of 'Roman' was applied to the Empire on the whole, rather than to Rome, or even Italy.

Severus was of Phoenician origin as were many of the senatores and equites of North Africa - from Augustean times onward they were quite Romanized but retained some Phoenician customs and language. IIRC his sister caused a scandal at the Roman court because of her heavily Phoenician accented Latin.

Emperor Heliogabalus was of Syrian origin I believe and some of his religious customs were considered too Oreintal for Roman metropolitan tastes. Heliogabalus was of course quite deranged which probably was more of a problem than him being Syrian...

Cheers,
Vandelay

Indeed - there is a fair amount of evidence for this (though some argue that this was falsified by later Christians).

All I know is that he had a special altar with representations of the Christian God and other such deities...many even argue that he was a monotheist, worshiping the Sun...just can't tell with all that propaganda...:(
