Wiz, a good gameplay addition would be to have the republic of Florence with a government akin to the Dutch Republic, with a Republican slider between Medici and Signoria. Then the Duchy of Tuscany is a monarchy that can be formed with 100% Medici slider and some other conditions posted above.

I really like this idea. So much so that I made a little prototype. Here are some screenshots:






Obviously all text and graphics are placeholders. Might work on this some more later if I find the motivation. Still needs a whole set of events for factions influence.

Unfortunately I couldn't adapt the Dutch Republic Orangist/Statist slider, since the way it works doesn't really allow for that without also changing it for the Dutch. A faction system with only 2 factions is functionally very similar though. Only difference is that bonuses aren't scaled.

edit: Changed election events so that Medici candidates always have the "di Medici" surname. Added screenshot of my Bonfire of the Vanities event.

That is a good system. Maybe there can be a special republican type of government in the Italian states to show the hegemonies of the great families. One can choose to keep the family in power election after election, lose republican tradition and only if you have a lot of papal influence can you request elevation to duchy. Which is what happened with Florence. They didn't ask for it as it was kind of a gift but the concept is the same.

I didn't include any Papal Influence/Papal opinion requirements, since that's often a factor too far outside the player's control.

Forming Tuscany requires that you do NOT have a Florentine Republic, so it's not just a case of "grab Siena, wait for ADM 10, success".

This looks like a really great mod. I love the history of the medici family and this would be a great chance to actually play as them. As opposed to losing the medici after cosimo dies in the vanilla game. The events look pretty great too. Are you planning on making this mod availiable, because I would love to try it.

This looks like a really great mod. I love the history of the medici family and this would be a great chance to actually play as them. As opposed to losing the medici after cosimo dies in the vanilla game. The events look pretty great too. Are you planning on making this mod availiable, because I would love to try it.

I've already got a Florentine mod, but haven't updated it in a while. If I can write a bunch of events for faction influence, I'll upload all of this as an update to that mod (which currently is very minimalistic). Without the faction influence events it'll feel a bit empty.

I, for one, look forward to the expanded mod, if the devs decide the arguments for changing the game itself are not persuasive. Just one thing; I've always seen the family name written as "de' Medici", with an E and an apostrophe. Is "di Medici" really used?

"de' Medici" does seem to be more common. Will probably change it to that. But it's all equally valid.

great. thanks. are these mods avaliable on steam? if so what is the name? It also might be interesting to add events that allow you to elect a member from a medici allied family that causes less of a gain for the medici faction and less of a republican tradition hit, because I believe that families associated with the medici were sometimes elected to the highest office for periods of time. i may be wrong though its been a while since i read about them :) Anyway it would be good to have some middle option. Also will stats be randomized or are they the normal 4/1/1?

Look for Repubblica Fiorentina on Steam. Might not be compatible with the latest patch though, and barely has any features.

Rulers have random stats, same as Dutch Republic, but stats don't increase with re-election.

I deliberately used the term "Gran Maestro" for the ruler, an unofficial title denoting de facto authority rather than "Gonfaloniere", the actual head of state; this avoids the issue of the Medici ruling through puppets.

I'll update it when it's ready.

The advantages of keeping the Medici in power are the bonuses you get from having their faction in power, the ability to switch to a monarchy if you want to, and role-playing benefits. In the screenshots you can see that I've given them +2 dip rep and -10% idea cost (which stacks with the Florentine/Tuscan idea group).

"Mameluke" isn't a nationality.
By contrast "Scandinavia", "The Commonwealth", "Sardinia-Piedmont", "Westphalia", "Tripoli", and "The Holy Roman Empire" are all nation states/nationalities, right.

Or maybe they each mark some transitioning into the modern era. Or a combination of the two. I'm not entirely sure by now.

I guess they call it Paradox Development Studios for a reason, huh.

Awesome work neondt, that is exactly this kind of gameplay additions that I had in mind. Sorry to see that it's not possible to have a slider like the Dutch Republic, it seems ideal really, maybe the dev could do something about it.
Regarding the formation of Tuscany, I really like the conditions. Wouldn't it be possible to merge "Abolish the Republic" and "Form Tuscany" though?
FInally, I was thinking of two separate idea sets. I might have a first draft later in the day. :)

Awesome work neondt, that is exactly this kind of gameplay additions that I had in mind. Sorry to see that it's not possible to have a slider like the Dutch Republic, it seems ideal really, maybe the dev could do something about it.
Regarding the formation of Tuscany, I really like the conditions. Wouldn't it be possible to merge "Abolish the Republic" and "Form Tuscany" though?
FInally, I was thinking of two separate idea sets. I might have a first draft later in the day. :)

They COULD be merged, but that would make it more complicated than it needs to be since nations other than Florence can use the decision. There'd need to be a whole lot of "if"s in there, which would get visually confusing.

That's very neat neondt, good ideas!
If performance was such a big issue, just replace Etruria with Florence. If Johan even says that 99% of the games played start at 1444 and Etruria isn't even formable and only appears briefly at the end of the possible time frame, I don't really see the point of that tag.

My proposal would be that Florence gets Italian minor ideas, however every time they have an election they have the choice to elect the Medici candiate (with random stats) which costs ten republican tradition but gives the bonus of -5% tech cost while that ruler is in charge.

Then there is the decision to form Tuscany which requires you to be a monarchy, have cored the whole Tuscan region, be Tuscan culture, and have both +100 papal relations and 100 papal influence. It gives you a new tag, the ability to move up one rank, from Duke to King, and gives you both 20 Aggressive Expansion, and -100 relations with the emperor, which amortises over 10 years.

I think this works, because it adds a new dynamic to gameplay as Florence, while still encouraging the historic movement into monarchy. Also the step from Duchy to Kingdom is something that only Tuscany managed inside the HRE, without becoming an elector, so it would be a cool thing for the game to reflect.
And kick you out from the empire, because you're a king.
Seriously, that system need an intermediate rank between duke and king.

It would be fun if not only could we have the de Medici family in Florence but also the Sforza in Milan and the Este family in Ferrara, etc.. Almost all of the different states had their powerful families. Perhaps by playing one of those, and re-electing the main family, the Republic would fall into conflict and if victorious would then become a duchy. We do need a government type, something like "Italian Republic" just like we have the Dutch Republic.
