Republic of Florence
The Republic of Florence existed from 1115 up to 1532. It was a wealthy city that was the home of the Renaissance and a place that harbored several influential artists and philosophers. The famous/infamous de Medici family also comes from here and transformed the place.
In 1532, Pope Clement VII who was a Medici appointed a Medici relative of his as Duke of Florence, which made Florence become a duchy and at the same time a hereditary monarchy.
Eventually, the Duchy of Florence conquered Siena and Pisa and consolidated its control over the region of Tuscany. Pope Pius V in 1569 then awarded the Duchy of Florence a higher status and therefore it became the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.
So with the new mechanics coming in Common Sense, I propose that Tuscany be renamed to Florence and given a Republic as government along with their original flag. Then have an event chain that turns it into the Duchy of Florence, with the Grand Duchy of Tuscany being formable if they manage to annex both Siena and Pisa.
This will add more flavor to the region and will be nice to have. It is also easy to create and we will have a strong power in Italy that can compete with the likes of Milan, Naples, and the Papacy.
Furthermore I also suggest that the province of Rome have a piece cut off in the north and be named Viterbo, an agricultural province with a somewhat low tax base, as an extra buff for the Papacy, plus the province of Rome is kind of big. Also cut Abruzzo into two provinces: L'Aquila and Chieti as both cities had major populations and it would look nice plus add more strategy to the peninsula. Finally, Corsica should be either its own culture (Corsican) or as another member of the forum stated: Tuscan culture would be much more accurate than Sardinian culture.
Extra bonus: Cut Epirus into two: Ionnina and Arta with Arta belonging to the Despotate of Epirus (despotic monarchy government) and Ionnina belonging to the Ottoman. Albania should also be cut into two provinces at least.
