While the asian department of the game could do with attention (I've been researching an asian mod for two years for eu3 by now so yes I do agree here ;)) I also prefer actual engine changes for expansions.
I also agree with adp101 that religion is probably the remaining area that needs the most attention (possibly along with the economic model of the game).
We just got a new expansion though so let's discover where that can take us first ;) It did bring a number of very interesting changes that apart from being nice in themselves will probably allow for some very nice modding.

Also, rather than asia, I think it is Muslim countries that need a redoing.

Most of those are in asia though ;)

Honestly while it would definately be nice with an expanded asian game I don't have confidence in paradox being able to carry out an expansion for asia (or perhaps even rotw in general?). The farther from europe you come the worse their research is. EU3s asia is pretty messed up, they've mixed up countries, dynasties and thrown in some fantasy countries for good meassure...
In general their research for rotw hasn't been the best in their games. They like making games about early modern europe after all and at this they are quite good. They've just given us an excellent expansion. While a new one for asia would be very nice I wouldn't count on it. Should they want to make another expansion I hope they would focus on the engine itself, give us a more detailed economy (just this would make for a huge expansion for asia in particular as the world economy to a very large degree was dependent on asia for all of the game's timeframe) and a better simulation of religions and cultures (in particular minority religion culture which would again make a huge difference in asia in general and in India in particular as the most of the states there where ruled by a cultural and religious, foreign minority). Enginewise Central Asia would also benefit greatly from a better way to simulate the nomadic tribes there.

Paradox has however provided us with a wonderfull engine and quite good research for europe and the areas immediately adjacent to it. It's entirely possible to mod the asian setup to greater accuracy with the current engine as the region isn't so different from europe as one might think. It is however quite different from how it's currently moddeled ;) but I doubt that means we'll see an expansion just for it (I would of course be very happy if one was announced though).

Apart from the WWM people, I'm also working on a mod specifically for asia (I started this long ago before they started expanding their indian theatre but for one man it does take some time). So far I've mostly been reworking india and persia/central asia, but it's planned to be an entire asian overhaul. I started reading up on the region a lot about two years ago when I was very dissapointed with my first indian game in vanilla and have since aquired quite a little library on indian and persian history :)
Not sure how much of a demand there is for such a mod (and there is loads still to be done so an initial release will be somewhat lacking in fluff) but as I put it together I thought I might as well release it :)

Time for a shameless screenshot plug:

Now this screenshot is actually a bit old, it's from IN (still working on some of the adjustments for HTTT) and since then I've actually changed the eastern himalayan region some :) It does give a taste of what an alternate 1399 start could look like though.

The sayids (or sayyids) where left by Timur to controll what he had conquered (well plundered more like) in India in 1398 when he sacked Delhi. As far as Timur was concerned they where the new sultans of Delhi (even though they where based in Multan). They controlled most of the punjab and would eventually oust the Tughlaqs from the throne of Delhi and become the new sultans there (though by then they had long since stopped paying respect or even attention to Timur).
And yep the blob in andhra is the reddis. :)

The sayyids are incorporated into vanilla HTTT in a fashion, as the ruling dynasty of Kashmir (a region they never ruled), but using the names and dates of the real Kashmiri Shah Mirs :-/

And actually there was a Sayyid dynasty in Kashmir: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sayyid_Dynasty

Interesting. The dynasty for that period is consequently refered to as the Shah Miri dynasty in all my sources. Might be I owe the paradox researcher an apology on this one though, as obviously dynasties can have several names (for instance most refer to the ruling dynasty of Gujarat as the Ahmad Shahis but the name paradox chose is also correct). Either this or wikipedia is wrong ;) In the entry for the founder of the dynasty they don't refer to it as sayid but rather shah miri...

EDIT: Ah but it seems I've gotten hold of something! Though I've just been able to skim for it, it would seem that the viziers of the Shah Mirs where often Sayyids (perhaps allways?) if so that might explain the confusion. Found this mentioned in "Kashmir Under the Sultans" that I got from my university library.

Did some further reading, it says that in the early 1400's the Sayyids took over Delhi but continued to be the vassal of Timur, Are you gonna make Delhi a vassal of the Turmids until the Lodis? And also what is your primary culture for Delhi and the Mughals?

They did so only in name though, they actually fought a war with timur (which fits nicely with how vassalage is broken in the game). Atleast it would seem from my sources that any allegiance to timur was only superficial (it was how they legitimated their claim to the throne of the sultanate after all so they would have to keep refering to it). My sources have the sayyids as breaking any remaining bonds to timur in 1423 already. A war against the timurids was later fought in 1431-1432 (seems to have been inconclusive though).

The timurids never wielded any real influence in northern India after Timurs initial attack (well obviously a certain timurid and his successors did but that's not related to the sayyids ;)).

Dude! Where did you lose Rajputana? Mah favourite!

Rajputana is a region, not a country (much like bihar or Gondwana). The area was divided into lots of small warrior states almost constantly fighting eachother and outsiders. There are plenty of Rajput states (even a few ones outside of Rajasthan though their populations aren't rajputs) in my mod though so you're welcome to unite the area if you want to. If what you liked was the flag, that's also still there but have been given to the sikhs of punjab as it's the sikh flag (no idea why paradox chose to give a sikh flag to their strange rajput unitary state).

Do you have an ETA for that? :)

January? Though as I mentioned stuff will have to be added afterwards, this initial release would be somewhat simple.

Haven't decided on that yet, though I'm leaning towards no as there was never such a state (and the creation of one does seem a bit unlikely as the rajput states where all fiercely independent)... Then again unifications are fun ;)
I am going to allow for a united hindu india for sure though, probably under the name Bharatavarsa or some such (I've seen other mods use the name Hindusthan but that word is persian and during this era it was mostly used to refer to the doab region in northern india and so I find it unlikely that a hindu state would ever use it to refer to itself).
I have a few other state formations planned as well :)
