I'm playing as Austria (Divine Wind 5.1) and have been concentrating on forming royal marriages so far, as part of a strategy to get the electors to vote me as Holy Roman Emperor. I've recently noticed a problem, namely that Brandenburg - one of the electors - is under a personal union with Luxembourg, even though Luxembourg is now ruled by a regency council and Brandenburg is ruled by its own king. How can it be possible for there to be a PU between two countries that no longer share the same monarch? This is especially annoying as I can no longer propose a royal marriage with Brandenburg. Is this a bug, or simply one of the nuances of the game (which does seem unlikely!)?

If it is a bug is there a workaround? Thanks.

Never seen this bug before but usually old information on map is usually refreshed upon a new month. So it might say PU with LUX but by next month it's nothing. Also, make sure you looking at the right nations since the colors and names can cause confusion. Try saving the game and re-entering or declare war to break the PU. But I honestly think it's just needs to be refreshed. There's not way to workaround such a bug because it's impossible for their to be a PU and not to share the same monarch. The game would have automatically break the PU if their relationship is below 0. Sometimes, though, the computer will break a PU manually when the Major is at war and the minor is not and both relations = 0.

Thanks for the reply.

Well it's been longer than a month and this is still going on, and what's more not only have - as you mentioned might happen - Luxembourg and Brandenburg been at war (against Burgundy) Burgundy has conquered Luxembourg outright, but the tool tip STILL says Brandenburg is under a PU with Luxembourg, which no longer exists as an independent country...

I've also noticed a similar problem involving Naples and Provence, where Provence is now governed by one king, Naples by a Regency Council, yet the game still thinks they are in a PU.

I'm pretty stuck now tbh. I've even tried using console commands on the monarchs in question to break the PUs, but these monarchs just won't die.

Nope, everything's set to normal.

Edit: I've also tried tag switching to Brandenburg and declaring war on Luxembourg - and the PU is still in place, despite Lux and Brandenburg being at war.

Is it possible something in the game files is corrupted? If so which files/folders would I need to access to put this right? Or if possible should I just uninstall and reinstall the game (I have the disc version)?

this just happens from time to time when the PU overlord dies and the heir is too young to take power immidiately, but it's essentially a display bug. The overlord has logged a successor and will thus be able to display "regency for..." but the junior PU doesn't seem to know what to display so it just adds some generic "new dynasty" name to the box. Mind you, the PU isn't over and they'll [most likely] get the correct name for both states when the regency is over.

That would make sense, but like I said before the game still tells me there is a PU even after one of the members of the PU has been annexed by a third party.

I have just started another game as a HRE member - the Palatinate - and the problem is still there.

Does anyone have any solutions?
