i was playing as sicily, trying to unite Italy hundreds of years people count cavour, i was making my way up italy when i realized i didnt have the resources anylonger to continue. i accepted their peace offers and hunkered down for a bit, rebuilding my army and improving my provinces....then....out of nowhere...appeared batman...i mean appeared a message saying that i was in a personal union with .....cant remember hte name, its the dark purple one at the north east end of italy...and im pretty dang sure i was the semi-vassal guy...i thought i couldnt be the semi-vassal guy...what happened?

Question part 2, again on my rampage through italy, i overran and seiged and took over several small states but when i went to diplo, the annex button was greyed out, why is that? its kinda annoying but im sure theres a good reason.

any help would be pretty much amazing....this is my first dive into the EU series, from hoi2 and everything is so different its crazy.

Well, you can't annex only one-province states, large need to be reduced in peace treaty first. And for personal union i can't tell you much.

1) You had a royal marriage with them, and your ruler died. You end up as the junior partner in the personal union. If the other realm's ruler had died first, you could have ended up as the senior partner instead.

2) You can only annex one-province nations after winning a siege in their only province. You cannot annex multiple-province nations in one go: first whittle them down to just their capital, and fight a second war to annex them.
