I read somewhere that Persia officially changed its name to Iran in 1935. Should PER be called Persia or Iran?
Apparently Churchill's government required all official documents to refer to it as Persia during the war. Interesting Wiki tidbit.
Too bad we can't dynamically change names. I'm sure modders would come up with a whole chain of events related to the change of name...+2 relations with Germany for changing to Iran.
It was actually possible to change the name of a country in HoI2. In Kaiserreich they were able to do that to rename Russia into Soviet Russia if you chose to go down that path. I'm not sure how it'll fly in this new engine though.
However, I don't think they'll do that in HoI 3. They'll either leave it at Persia or Iran. They aren't that paramount to the game as a whole except for the coup event and if they expand on the Soviet influence in Iran. It just depends. Westerners at that time referred to it as Persia, but I believe the Iranians themselves have always referred to it as Iran. Technically speaking after some point in the 1930s they wanted the international community to refer to them as Iran, but again, it's not that important to the game as a whole.
Flags and what not can easily be changed via modding I'd imagine.
Someone, a couple of years ago, even threatend (on this forum) to go to the United Nations about this. So far the Security Council hasn't responded.(this isn't a joke)
My guess is that it will be Persia, since that was how the nation was called by most foreign nations in those days. What ever they called themselves isn't really important
And most people referred to Ethiopia as Abyssinia, but Ethiopia isn't called that in game.My guess is that it will be Persia, since that was how the nation was called by most foreign nations in those days.
How is it not? In that case we can simply rename the Soviet Union to Russia, Britain to England, etc.?What ever they called themselves isn't really important
Das Dritte Reich was an 'official' name like, say, the United States of America or United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Hitler didn't call his people "Third Reichers" or whatever, the word "Germans" was still in place much like how it is improper to address a British person as "Unitedkingdogreatbritannorirelander" or whatever.Pretty much every major nation referred to it as 'Persia' during this time frame. It fits the WWII atmosphere. Just because they changed their name, doesn’t mean the world had to instantly obey. Das Dritte Reich was still called 'Germany' or 'Nazi Germany' by English speakers no matter what Hitler wanted. Not Deutschland.
And most people referred to Ethiopia as Abyssinia, but Ethiopia isn't call that in game.

Anyway, every language has different names for different nations... It's part of the fun of diversity. I despise these people trying to name everything so we all use the same words. 'Korea' sounds right to an English speaker, not Dae Han Min Gook! Churchill and Roosevelt didn’t call Japan 'Nihon'. What nation is Magyarország? You get the point.

That'd elude most Americans, just like most of the world used "Russia" instead of the Soviet Union. The only real difference between those examples and, say, Persia or the Third Reich is that opposition to them is political rather than ignorance. (Albeit as stated, the Third Reich was an official name and not the everyday name used)Because Britain is not just another name for England. England is a component part of Great Britain![]()
You forgot that I've been one of the chief explainers of the SSR system on this forum. The Russian SFSR was not the Soviet Union. It played a vital part (obviously) and was in many ways the center of power, but it wasn't the Soviet Union. I know that Russia already exists as its own possible revolt nation, but I'm using it as an example. There is also a problem you forgot about - there is a nation of Russia in Hearts of Iron which is distinct from Soviet Union.
Actually if anything it's more ideologically charged. Bolshevist Russia to my knowledge basically went out of style by the 30's and when one said Russia, you basically knew they weren't aware of what the Soviet Union was. The debate between Iran and Persia had to do with the direction of state culture, relations with Germany, and relations with Britain.the distinction between Iran and Persia is less ideologically charged
