I just wanted to ask if anyone knows what was the status of Persia as of late 1700s. Were they still holding on to all those possesions between Mediteranian and India? Or were they a mere shadow of their old self?
By late 1700s Persia did not control Iraq and was fighting periodic wars with the Ottoman Empire and Russia. The Persians did have a pretty competent military ruler in the mid-1700 period, but I can't remember his name.
Nader Shah (depending on your particular spelling preferences, of course.)
He was a fairly impressive military figure, something of a conqueror too. But I believe he was overthrown in the end due to the excessive harshness of his regime.
