Hello CORE team,

Can I use CORE (AOD and HOI2) versions as needed for a new Darkest Hour CORE-based mod please?

I intend to use the E3 map.
I am attracted by the CORE tech pages for hoi2 which are like the Iron Cross techs. I was planning to have my techs in the same style. I mean more specific and not just "1936 infantry", "1938 infantry" etc etc.

The CORE techs will give me a good basis to work from. I mean I am going to add more techs but the CORE techs will still be there for the most part.

I will be adding new stuff of my own. Some totally new ideas as regards units etc. I mean a different way of having units on the map, not just more units.

.............

I was looking as far back as HOI 1 to find a game or mod that used the style of techs I wanted to have. Only today I discovered CORE has it already. So instead of starting from scratch, which is very off-putting, if I could use CORE it will give me a good basis to proceed.

I will of course acknowledge that I am using CORE in the new mod.

So far I have downloaded bits n pieces of CORE versions from DD days and one AOD version, but I don't have it all, as most of the old links are very dead and with the move to the new forum, these have all been lost it seems.

EDIT:

I would like to call the mod "C.O.R.E for Darkest Hour".
As I said above, the mod will be based on CORE for hoi2 and AoD, but would include new ideas, a new map, extended tech pages with lots of detail, hopefully less "generic" features. It will be a mod involving lots of TLC (tender loving care) as I will be working on it full time.

I am not over-awed by the approach of hoi IV. I think hoi2 based games will still be played 5 years from now.

Hi,

I'm just one of the team. but I would personally be ok with ost of what you are suggesting. I've considered doing a DH conversion myself as I do like the E3 map. But not enough time for the amount of work required. My one issue is that calling it CORE for DH implies that we built it. So I'd suggest something a little less direct in the naming. LEt's see what the rest of the team has to say. Thanks!

Same here, provided there's some reference to CORE whilst not implying it's our own work. Denniss's suggestion seems to fit the bill in that respect.

Thanks for the support. A week is a long time in modding, as in other things.

I'm now way beyond my ideas of using CORE. Yes CORE and Iron Cross and of course HOI 1 have the style and elements that I want to pursue. Previously I was thinking of using some of what CORE and the others had, but now I realise I will need to start from scratch. A blank canvas.

But now my ideas are having 300 techs per page, none of these generic techs for the armour page. For the armour page, the USA, SOV, GER and maybe ENG, ITA and JAP, have their tanks etc listed in series. Not "1942 armour" but "M4 Sherman" etc etc. Whether I can get armour, engine and gun type in there not known.

TD, SPART, ART etc would be on another page. Naval and air would suffer loss of space, but do they actually need a page to themselves?

My idea is to get the player to actually think about what he is building and why. As my impression is he could be building strawberries for all he cares with the generic type techs familiar to us all, but it is of course understandable why it was done in this way.

My goal is more detail and just more detail.

Why not make it so that researching ARM techs triggers décisions to "customize" your Equipment?

Some modders has similar ideas for HOI3, check these out for instance:

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/mod-deutsche-wehrmacht-immersion-dwi.657544/

-Armor unit techs and events: research your armor units using the vanilla tech tree. Different levels of research will allow technical breakthroughs and new components for your armored units. Armor units will get bonuses as their historical components get researched. Gone are the days when units will continue to upgrade passed their historical capability. For example, researching tank gun level two as Germany will fire an event for the 5.0 cm L60 tank gun. The event awards the tech for the 5.0 cm gun and the PzIII will then be upgraded with this weapon increasing its penetration by one. As this was the most powerful weapon mounted on the PzIII, researching better weapons will not upgrade the unit. If the player wishes for the unit to improve, he must either build the PzIVh brigade, or upgrade the PzIII unit to the PzIVh.

https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/mod-rpm-2-tears-of-war.695216/

This mod adds historical immersion to unit models by making the introduction of each new model come about through decision. Currently, the mod does this for all naval and land models of the major nations, and the air units, of ENG, GER, JAP, and USA. The other majors will be completed in future versions. Additional land, naval, and air models are also included for the Commonwealth nations and most of the Axis minors, as well as Republican and Nationalist Spain.
The process is simple. Players research the required techs to activate each model. From there, the model is activated and the “hidden” tech components of the unit are upgraded to reflect the new model.
Each major nation has a wide range of historical models for ships, tanks, and self-propelled support units. We have also redone the tech tree to allow for a more streamlined research process that activates these models.

Thanks for the advice FT, it is much appreciated.

I haven't played hoi3 for years. I did try to play it again recently, but gave up, again organising the OOb's and not being able to control my army other than by AI totally flummaxed me. Maybe I'm just a shit player?

I will definitely download those mods and have a look. Thanks for the links, as I was not aware of these mods at all.

..............

YES, I can do 300 techs per page easily, but of course who wants that!
My previous idea, and I tested it and it worked grand, was to have the vanilla techs fire and give the player decisions and events where he could Decide to build a prototype and then each subsequent different model by event. ALSO, each model did not necessarily upgrade to the next model. So if he chose to, he could have a Pz1 or PzII still around in 1945.
Downside was that I felt the player may forget what model he was on and having a tech tree reminds him exactly what stage he is at.

I THEN thought of having the vanilla techs (which are good so why change them) along with a subset of new techs ... which are the actual models of tanks etc. for each major. This is where I am now.

I've been researchig this for months and playing around with ideas also for months. I'm still not set on a final course of action.

.................

Then I started looking at HOI1, Iron Cross and CORE Hoi1 and hoi2. Hence this request thread.

AGAIN, doing techs is very laborious and like a final solution, once done they are set in stone. I mean my belief is I really need to sort out a plan of action BEFORE I start, as swapping mid-stream would be a disaster.

............

I'm trying to achive a mod where the player learns about his armour/art/ etc and WHY he needs to upgrade them.

So, player gets an event telling him the enemy has tech X, he realises that the new enemy tank gun will out-shoot his best tanks, so he needs to do something about it, either upgrade or research a new gun or new tank, or new ammo. Something like you said above. We agree!

I want a deeper playing experience for the player. He LEARNS something also while playing. How and why things advanced over time. Not just blindly playing and not giving a hoot as to what he is doing.

Thanks again for your valuable post and the links. I have more stuff to study now. Cheers

EDIT: I was also planning to have tank regiments and being able to activate most of the dh brigades so they become independent units on the map. I'm not talking about having more units, it would be a new way of having units altogether. I've tested it and it works very well.

This would allow the player to create a panzer division from the units on the map. I mean add 2 x Pz tank regiments, 1 x MOT brigade and another 2 units to make a total of 5 (max allowed). Otherwise these units are independent. It would add immersion.

Hi,

Well good luck with what you are building. I did most of the TT work for CORE after the original members left. Indeed you want to have a very solid plan before you build it. While it is possible to add Techs in after the fact it tends to generate a lot of rework. Especially if it requires a substantial number of AI file edits. I'd initially add anything I think I might want with at least placeholder data in the AI files. That way there is less to do if you do decide to add something later. I'd also note that one of the harder aspects was getting a good visual presentation on the Tech pages. This involved a lot of shifting things pixel by pixel to make it look good. But it's effort well spent if it makes things obvious to the player.
