So, the star and crescent were common symbols throughout the Medieval world, including several Muslim states. But they weren't a specifically Islamic symbol until the 20th century. So, although they are instantly recognizable to a modern audience, they are in fact highly anachronistic.
What would be good, historically-appropriate alternatives for Muslims in-game? The best I can think of would be calligraphic emblems, which could appear graphically similar to the green-and-gold calligraphic symbol used in place of a portrait for Muhammad in-game. For Sunni, we could simply use the calligraphy for Allah. For the Shia, there are calligraphic combinations of Allah, Muhammad, and the names of Ali and his family, which could be used. Examples of each:
As for dynasty coats-of-arms, they're largely anachronistic for most Muslims, but they are required in game. And if we're going to have them, it would be better for the symbolism on them to be more period-appropriate, rather than completely dominated by star and/or crescent designs. Muslim shield designs often incorporated floral and calligraphic elements, and it would be nice to see some of those instead of/in addition to the star and crescent for half of all Muslims in game.
And yes, I understand that the star and crescent are used because they are highly recognizable, and that it's unlikely to see a total change in Islamic imagery and symbolism this late in the game's development. But I think it's worth discussing anyway.
