performance loss

Hi,

I've played this game long before (Sword of Islam was the latest then I believe) and I recently started this again with all the newest DLCs. Back then everything was smooth even with all settings high but now I'm suffering a huge performance loss. I'm using the FRAPS software to track mf FPS where most games including my then CK2 usually hit around 60 (never goes past it) where FPS is smoothest. Now when I test it, it goes to 20-30 !

My system is as follows :

- Intel Core i5-3550 CPU @ 3.30 GHz
- 8.00 GB RAM
- Windows 7 64-bit
- AMD Radeon Sapphire HD 7970 3 GB of 384bit GDDR 5 Memory (had my PC check the Internet for driver updates but says it's up-to-date)
- around 50 GB free hard drive space

Is it because the latest CK2's with all the DLC's is significantly slower than earlier editions of it ? Or is it because I'm using a mod (CK2 Plus) ?

In any case, can anyone point me in the right direction to boost performance ? I will of course do the obvious path of lowering graphics settings but if there's anything else I can do please let me know.

UPDATE : I've lowered my resolution to the lowest possible (1024x768) and even turned trees off, but it still hasn't budged at 22-23 FPS

I'd like it if anybody could help, time is moving incredibly slowly now

You can easily test this by switching the mod off and try to play the 'vanilla' game (with dlc's etc enabled of course). There are a lot of things added to CK2Plus, and it might have an extra impact on performance. It's important to know however if you get the same performance when not running the mod.

Please post a DxDiag if the above does not help:

* Open your Start menu
* Type "dxdiag" in the search field (without quotes)
* Open the dxdiag program
* A window called "DirectX Diagnostic Tool" should pop up now
* At the bottom right-hand side, click on "Save all information"
* Save it to a place where you can find it easily, for example your desktop
* Open the file and copy and paste the text between [NOPARSE]

Also I noticed in-game esp when zoomed in that there are like clouds/fog drifting, maybe I can try disabling those too ?

In any case, it'd be a shame if I can't get to play CK2 Plus just on account of performance issues, it's such a great mod.

Thank you ! I had a suspicion that my drivers were out of date but when I had Windows check for updates it said they were up to date.

And just to be reaally sure (I am awkward with computers), I am downloading only the first link (Catalyst Software Suite), not the other two (Latest Beta Driver and AMD Catalyst Application Profiles) ?

Hey I did everything correctly (double-checked driver version and it's indeed up to date) but I'm still getting a little over 20 FPS

I guess I could just live with it. I'm just surprised as I thought I had a relatively powerful system. I mean it's not as powerful as the latest rigs but at least enough to run CK2 (I could run games like Shogun 2 on max settings fairly smoothly).

Anyway if you've still some more tricks up your sleeve let me know. Otherwise thanks for all your help

What i see , is that your audio drivers are from 2011 and that the Monitor name says "Generic PnP Monitor".

So i suggest trying to update your audio driver and look at your motherboard/system vendor if they got some first, before going to VIA directly.

The "Generic PnP Monitor" suggests to me that you used Windows drivers instead of ones by the manufacturer. Might try to find some at Samsung.

That's just what i see, might matter, might not.
Maybe Icratox has an idea.

Hmm how will I know which drivers are for me ? Can you link me like what Icratox did ?

I didn't want to bring this back anymore but it's become unbearable esp if i wanna fast forward. Anyone know any other tips aside from resolution change and removing trees ?

As Icratox said, that hardware specifications you shared should definitely be able to run the game fast, ck2plus or not.

As i don't know your audio codec or motherboards or system vendor i can't link to it. You should check their support first before VIA and at their hompage (the vendor might have optimised drivers compared to VIA) it should be easy to find for you.
The same for Samsung screen. I can't see which you got, so just go on their official hompage.

As Icratox and riknap said, the machine is proper and as you said it worked before, so i doubt it has anything to do with the drivers.

You are aware that there can be programs running without you starting them or being obviously displayed in the Task-Manager ? I guess so, just asking in case.
As it run well before, ask yourself what you got installed in the mean time. Some browser apps, antivir programs or such.
I suspect an external program as well to be the reason.

I'd actually recommend doing what Aardvark mentioned above.

Also, could you also give the Checksum of the game (you can see this when you get in the main menu at the bottom left). And try to play the game once as well with all DLC's enabled and a fresh new game rather than a save (not sure if you already tried this).
