Performance Issues

Since I don't see any thread dedicated to this I'm starting a new one to see if people are experiencing the same issues and maybe share good tips.

The game is great, but it's really hard to enjoy when after 10 minutes of play the game starts lagging like hell, all graphic options safe borders are disabled and the game has problem processing speed 3 or 4 normally, also I get a lag of about 10 seconds at the start of every month.

I'm playing on a rather old laptop (3 years) so I wasn't expecting wonders, but well at least to have a graphically reduced more or less fluid game (when you need 4hours of play to get through 10 years of history it becomes quite annoying).

My specs : CPU : Dual core i5 2.27GHz, 4GB RAM, ATI 4500/5100 (512Mb) graphic card and a 1366x768 resolution (already tried lowering it, with next to no effect).

This is mostly annoying due to my spec being above the minimum (except maybe for the GPU), will it be possible to play on at least speed 3/4 (I've got problems with speed 5 with CK2 sometimes) ?

Do you have latest video card drivers? Have you tried turning off some graphic effects like trees/water/multi sampling?

I've read in some other thread that turning rivers off got a huge preformance improvement for some people.

Open settings.txt in Documents/Paradox Interactive/Europa Universalis Demo/ and try changing some values and see how it works out for you.

There is a chance the demo isn't running as smoothly as the actual game will on release. Not sure about everyone else, but the demo seems iffy when it loads.... and it's not like I'm short on specs (multicore 3.5ghz CPU, 8 gigs of ram, etc.).

I had quite big performance issues as well, both with my pc(Amd 4 cores 3.2gh, 8gb ram GTS 450 GFfx) and my laptop(i7, 8gb ram, gt640 gfx). The problem might be a memory leak. I had problems especially playing with ottomans where you have the vision of India and far east. And also i got a kind of screen tearing when i try to move around with anything. I strongly hope it is a demo issue...

Yeah I turned off pretty much everything, anyway I sure hope it's a demo issue...

Anyway gonna check drivers again and hope that it works smoothly on the 13th

Im with everyone else lol. I really hope this is just the demo so i am not getting outraged just yet lol.

On my demo everything is working fine. No graphics issue. No map distortions. And the the game runs fine as far as it isnt lagging because my laptop is so slow. In fact the ONLY thing im having an issue with that I hope is just a glitch and wont be in game is that WHENEVER I click on an army or a navy the map will no longer allow me to move up or down. ITs like being stuck in a square box. The world itself continues. Oceans move, soldiers swing back and forth, ships pass by but my map is stuck.

Make sure that when you've got performance problems that you check first if you have the latest video card drivers, these usually help increasing performance.

My stuff worked fine for CK2 and it works fine for EU4 except that one glitch. Would that still be a card issue?

For me the general performance seems all right, but I do experience rather annoying screen shaking/tearing when moving the camera after a while of playing. Changing the video options doesn't seem to affect it much...

I went on to Intel and found I have a driver update to do so I'm working on that now. Thanks. I'll post again whether or not it helped.

I'm glad some people have this issue because I thought it was just me. I use to run CK2 very, very smoothly but this is pretty laggy. My drivers are up to date. My specs are as follows: Intel Core i5 2.40 Ghz, 3 GB DDR2 RAM and an ATI Radeon HD 5650 (a laptop card) with 2 GB of dedicated memory. I should not be having trouble running this at all so I really hope it is something to do with the demo.
