Writing Wraith said:Silk road doesn't exist yet, connections between China/East Asia and India/Rome were rather sporadic with long sea routes through South East Asia or very dangerous overland trails through the Himalayas and the deserts of what is now western China.
The "Silk Road" essentially came into being from the 1st century BC, following these efforts by China to consolidate a road to the Western world and India, both through direct settlements in the area of the Tarim Basin and diplomatic relations with the countries of the Dayuan, Parthians and Bactrians further west. The Han Chinese army regularly police the trade route against nomadic bandit forces. Han general Ban Chao led an army of 70,000 mounted infantry and light cavalry troops in the 1st century AD to secure the trade routes, reaching far west across central Asia to the doorstep of Europe, and setting up base on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
Writing Wraith said:The other problem with this map is there is a lot of area in there (the Steppe) that we have absolutely no records for from this time period, we can only suspect that a shifting hierarchy of nomadic tribes existed there.
From the look of the Ptolemaic map and the circular map, I would suspect that the island is Zanzibar. If it is a know island I suppose it could be Madagascar. BUT, I think it´s just a decoration on Terra Incognita.

Tommyknocker said:Well, I myself know of three major tribes of the steppes. Going from West to East (roughly)- Sarmations, Saka and Yuezhi. These were important factions, and I know at least the first two kept diplomatic relations with Rome.

Wiking said:I love it how these old maps always end in the middle of nowhere. I mean, if their guys went up to a certain point and then turned back, how the hell did they assume that the world just ends there?
(referring to the map in the first post, not the last one)
yes I thought so too. And on the other side maybe the Cap verde Islands : these would be the southern limits of roman knowledge.wilcoxchar said:From the look of the Ptolemaic map and the circular map, I would suspect that the island is Zanzibar.
muttoneer said:To base the game around a map that is less of a top down view of the world and more of a depiction of what the consuls in Rome thought the world looked like would be an incredibly brave decision for the developers to make, and it would set the game apart from other historical strategy games with such an individual look.
However... as the name says this will be an EU game and I doubt there will be much departure from previous games in the series as far as the map type is concerned. Still, I do think this is worth serious consideration for a mod!
They did know of the Canaries. As in the Ptolemy map, they were known as the fortunate Islands.Knight Richard said:that's interesting. I didn't know the romans had knowledge of the canaries and what appears to be cape verde?(that last little island that seems to be under Egypt)
Given that there's no point in featuring the world all the way to the Indus in a game focused on expansion in the Roman world, it seems unlikely that the development team has that sort of "foresight". Stop at about the eastern edge of Roman influence somewhere in the middle of Persia to get a more compact map, a clearer game focus, and fewer bodies of water.el_dude said:the nice thing about the map situation is that EU Rome is still very much a work in progress. i just hope the development team has enough foresight to extend that map eastward to the indus.
