This was announced a while ago, but accounts that had not been merged over to the new forum have been soft erased in a way, to clear up names/space for new members.
TinyWIking also hinted that an upcoming feature requires accounts to be merged and that that was the main reason for the purge.

What if one of those users tries to login with their account? Would they get the opportunity to restore their old account or is the purge permanent? And if so then what happens if the user in question would have game codes registered to his account then wouldn't those be gone?The above gentlemen are spot on
If you see an account called "Unmerged(XXX)" it means that this user was active on our old forum platform but never merged his forum account to his Paradox account before "The great purge" of user names.

They will be able to get their accounts back. The accounts are not deleted, we've just freed up names previously held by inactive accounts. If someone with an old account decides to return to the forum they will be able to merge their previous account as long as they create a Paradox account using the same email. If they don't we can still fix it, though it takes some fiddling
