I try to keep an open mind but there are some things I just can't stand (such as fantasy things).
As for The Division, I was not following the game at all, then when the beta came out I tried it and I fell in love.
Stellaris when it comes out but now some total War, CoH Great War Mod, Mount and blade, and finally some Verdun
When I'm waiting for a pc game, I like to switch things up and play some console sports titles. Career mode can suck up a lot of time. If you're wedded to the pc, I could think of a few games that would eat up a month:
Europa Barbarorum 2
XCom Long War (even the short version can run you 100+ hours)
Grim Dawn
Distant Worlds
Panzer Corps Grand Campaign '39-45 (probably take you to August to finish).
Order of Battle Pacific
As others have mentioned, WitE/W
Feeling old school: John Tiller's Campaign Series or maybe TOAW3 (though I never played the latter). I really loved JTCS despite it's various flaws. I especially enjoyed the campaigns: Big Red One, Fallschirmjager, Screaming Eagles (captain Winters is one of your actual commanders!!), Operation Rumyantsev, Battle of the Bulge (as Germans), Kokoda Trail... I could go on and on. You'd be playing all those for like 6 months. Even the East Front tutorial missions are great fun: Operation Typhoon has stalled out and your elite ski infantry have just arrived from Siberia. It's time for a counter-offensive!

If I had the time I'd be playing this.
Unfortunately I have to divide my time between my M.Sc. thesis and job hunting. No games for me until Stellaris and HoI4 are out and everything else in my life pales into insignificance.

Been playing quite a bit of Darkest Hour... Question to those that have played Darkest Hour and HOI3, have you gotten into enjoying HOI3? How so? Not trying to be a dick, I've tried a few times and it just seems completely foreign and unintuitive.
Might have to try again, but could someone illuminate the positives over Darkest Hour?
ps a pretty fun play through is imagining Stalin went full on expansionist USSR in 1933 on Darkest Hour, that kept me pretty entertained.

Rule the Waves. Just finished games as Byzantium and China (not historical) and I'm nearing the end of a game as Germany now.
Impressive AI, solid naval realism, outdated graphics, terrific replay value. My new most-favorite game.

@linen : over in OT are AARs by myself, @Iridium and @TheLoneGunman and Youtube has lots of Let's Play videos. I recommend you give it a look.
