There is nothing more annoying than trying to convert the entire world to your religion, then you realize the few people still holding out are your vassals.

Is there any chance we will see the ability to peacefully convert your vassals to the parent countries religion? Same goes for gov. type, I would like to convince all my vassals to rule in the same manner I rule.

Outside of the HRE there is no way to do this.

There really should be an "enforce religious unity" option for vassals though as well, where refusing leads to a war where you can vassalise and convert all in one option. I really dislike this in cases where it costs more than 50% war score to vasalise them so you can't force religion and vasalise in the same war, and often lack a CB and have to take another infamy hit if you want to force convert them.

Yes, a HRE like decision or diplomatic move to do toward a vassal that doesn't have our religion could well represent a country's influence in the vassal country. However, Ottoman Empire tolerance about religion is never shown in the game. Historically, they didn't convert all the balkans in a few year (and they didn't collapse in no time either).

Slightly off topic, but even inside the HRE enforcing religious unity doesn't always work well.

Want to enforce religious unity on a vassal of another HRE country? If diplomacy fails your options are limited. If you declare war on the vassal, you end up at war with the vassal's liege and cannot make a separate peace to force religion. Instead, your only option is to demand the vassal's territory in a peace agreement for 4 infamy per province, perform the conversion manually, and then release the vassal for a reduction of 2 infamy per province (or keep the territory). I don't mind that you go to war with the liege, but it would be nice if there was a peace option with the liege to force religion on the vassal.

On the whole, I feel the entire religious unity system could use some polishing. Perhaps we'll see this in the next expansion, or in EU4? :)

jdrou provided an example of a spy mission that, if I recall correctly, would alter religions for the target country, and could just as easily refund the spy and cost no ducats. As it is there is no way to mod in diplomatic options, but spies are versatile.

I don't recall the thread, but good luck figuring it out.

This is what I use, which is a slightly modified version of jdrou's spy mission. I changed it to also change the capital province's religion, so the AI wouldn't change religions back to whatever they had previously. There is probably a much cleaner way of doing it, but this works for me.

Force convert the Emperor to Orthodoxy and he'll start changing states to your religion rather than away from it.

He's allies with a mega-austria and far too powerful for me, they have military access to north italy and the balkans and can pour millions into my heartland. Even mass war exhaustion from losing units in a scorched earth zone doesn't inflict a wound on them.

Actually, an addition to the "Convert to _______" decision can be added that makes it impossible for vassals unless the overlord is of that religion. I added that to my game in an older version. Sadly I'd have to re-add it again, but I believe it's the most elegant resolution since the player doesn't have to get involved.

Why so? One of the first Protestant nations (Prussia) was a vassal of a Catholic nation.

There are always exceptions, but it's definitely superior in almost every way to sending a spy into a subject nations capital to convert that king and everyone in the capital province. It's a passive rule, meaning the player doesn't have to react to it, which is always good for these type of problems, and it also makes sense that rules are shown in heart of the problem (the conversion decision), than in an odd place like a spy mission to fix the problem.

The entire Thirty Years war was about vassals whose religion was different from their overlord's. It's not an exception but a whole ideology. Perhaps a diplomatic option to convert a vassal could be added, but I see no reason to forbid vassals from changing religions.

To call the member states of the HRE vassals is really pushing the historical envelope. Besides, we already have a whole separate game feature to simulate the relation between the member states, the emperor, and the religious conflict between them. Besides, you're asking for something that can't be modded into the game, which is, no offense, a completely pointless comment, considering it will likely never materialize in the hands of modders. On the other hand, restricting vassals ability to convert by inserting a few lines into the decision works just fine. It did for me exactly what the OP was asking for and didn't require an awkwardly implemented spy mission or a whole new expansion pack to achieve.

I assume that the question asked by the OP to the world at large was more of a request for a feature from Paradox. They've been adding features via pathes for a long time now, so I don't see why this particular request would be impossible without another expansion.

For states that were forced vassalized, perhaps its alright

However, my issue is with released vassals.

Can we change released states to a new category of puppet states? Yes, they are vassals I guess, but they are not in the same league. After all, the game mechanics encourage you to release states. I know the religion they adopt is yours if they were originally a heathen country, but can't it change so ALL released states are same religion? And another thing, could there be an option that you can update their technologies to your level? Its really annoying releasing states like Adal, for example, only to have them 20 technologies behind, unable to even build forts. I like how they take your government type, but can't we also make it possible that they should convert to your form of government when you switch, even if they couldn't adopt that government form at their current tech? It would really make releasing states more worthwhile. Also I guess, on a technical note, you should be able to get causus belli from states bordering your vassals. Its annoying how Holy War wont show up when you have buffer states on your sides
