So I recently started a game after a long time. Trying to figure out what I should do with the FE that's near my borders.

30 some years after the started They demanded I surrender some of my pop for 10 years of -10% happiness. Not being able to resist their overwhelming strength with my 1k fleet I gave in.

10 years later I got DoWed by two empires bordering me, it dragged on because they managed to combine their fleet in to a 3.5k(but going up as one of them was rebuilding) stack against my 3.2k stack and I didn't want to risk a direct confrontation since they had cruisers and I didn't. While I was running around trying to strategically siege the enemy planets the FE gifted me a 1500 MP battle cruiser, which completely broke the balance of power.

So after I finished the war I wonder if we can be long term friends?

What do FE usually do later on? I'm a slave empire(oh god the influence drain, who's idea was this????), so I don't know if that's a problem nowadays with all these changes.

Well it sounds like you have a xenophile FE near you, and they're the most benign ones, so unless you actively piss them off by purging a bunch of cuddly aliens you should be fine.

Long term friendship is unlikely, unless you give up slavery. From the surrender pop event I'm guessing you got the Enigmatic Observers (xenophile) type, which hates slavery and purging and will eventually declare war to make you stop.

For other FE events, see the wiki: http://www.stellariswiki.com/Fallen_empire

To be more precise, they hate it when you do it to other races. You can purge and enslave your own people all day long. Just don't go doing it to other people

Depend on the Fallen Empire.

Xenophile and materialist tend to ask for stuff and if you comply you sometime get perk like you got and won't do much else until they awaken, unless you piss them off (piss of is something like -200 if I'm not mistaken). They might also come to the defense of the galaxy if there is a end game crisis.

Spiritualist and Xenophobe are mostly just prevent colonization on certain world. Spiritualist will react badly to colonizing holy world (gaia world with a special modifier that are usually close to them) and tomb world (they consider them like graveyard). While Xenophobe guess annoyed if you settle close to them and react very badly to border friction.

As for what they do once they awaken, it also depend on the type, but there is sacrifice to everyone of them if you actually want to be friendly.

Spiritualist and materialist are very similar in that they mostly let you be free as their protectorate, but in the case of spiritualist they will force you to convert to spiritualist ethos and government if you aren't (which also end up been a soft ban on robot as spiritualist pop dislike robot), while materialist force you to give them 25% of your researsh and ban robot.

As for xenophone if you become their thrall, you are free to conquer whatever you want from other xeno, but you can't no longer colonize.

Then xenophile get you to sign a galatic peace threaty, which basically mean you can't no longer wage war (outside of trying to get independence, as they won't even invite you to war they start) and are forced to ban slavery and purge.

So if they aren't the one that awakens, then I can just do whatever I want? They have -20 for my purge and slave policy, but so far hasn't reacted to me enslaving/purging other species. Is it a triggered demand? If so what's the criteria?

Those events are specific for Xenophile FE's. The demanded pop is a one time thing. But they will keep giving you ships and resources, as long as relationships stay high enough. Charismatic Leaders + Fanatic Xenophile can reportedly do that persistently.

So if they aren't the one that awakens, then I can just do whatever I want? They have -20 for my purge and slave policy, but so far hasn't reacted to me enslaving/purging other species. Is it a triggered demand? If so what's the criteria?
Mostly it is triggered by poor relations. Then they will demand stuff following thier Ethos.

Pretty much. If they don't awaken, it's very easy for a regular Empire to eventually overpower them. And you can, and should, conquer them as they have very powerful home planets which can give you an extremely powerful boost to your economy.

As for pissing them off, they'll usually give you a warning ahead of time if you're doing something they really don't like. Unless you straight up colonize a Holy World, or a planet right next to the Xenophobes, they'll give you some warning before they declare war on you.

Btw just don't go over about -50 border friction against xenophobe FEs and you'll be fine. I once couldn't resist the temptation of a 25/23 system right next to a phobe FE and it was fine with -42 border friction due to both planets growing full. The moment I finished researching a border tech and border friction jumped to like -6,70 however, the FE got pissed and declared war on me. I'm not certain what the threshold is but assume it'd be something around -50.

I've not only had good long standing relations with a Fallen Empire, but after it Awoke it continued the prosperous relations. Eventually, they took their rightful place in the United Frontier Concord as full federation members.
