Oh my word... why is it when you have hammered the enemy, takign all his provs, destoryed all his boats and all his armies... that he offers you 10 useless provs and refuses to accept peace when you demand everything but his capital, i mean i can annex him against his will but not dictate a peace!!!

grrrrrrrrrr

any ideas how to get round this?

and why is it when i have one of each type of colonial building it still wont let me claim the colony unless i have every prov built in?

Because the dishonour of being left with only his capital is so great, that he would rather die...

Other than this he has some (reasonable) bargaining power, forcing you to take it all.

If you are speaking of a large civilized opponent, then the game does not present any adverse effects to refusing peace. That is, you cannot just create a de facto ownership of some area (as in HOI), which is terrible in my oppinion, as you might end up slaughtering the people you are trying to liberate.

All provinces in the state must be claimed by someone. Then anyone with one claim building of each type may claim the colony. - Why? - Because it would not make sense to establish a colonial state that has not been tamed...

Such wonderful reasoning you will rarely find :p

Why is it that the king in chess can only move one step at a time, he's the king after all? Because those are the rules of the game. ;)

Well I was mostly jsut ranting about how this tiny unciv nation can refuse a great power when they have throughly smashed them... I mean if i wanted a peace like that back in real life and they said no, someone inside their own nation would... er... replace him...

Ah i see re the colonial thing, it doesn't say the other provences must be full. it says they must all be full or you have four buildings of each type, not each colonial prov must have a buildign and you must either own them all or one of each type...

It doesn't matter, it is just my colonial attempts got stuck waiting for tech as the life ration thingy was too low...

Kinda my first game as a power that has the clout to even play with colonialism....

As for the HOI comments yeah I play hoi2 alot, but i never deliberately set up an area of defacto rule, i much prefer to annex, just you try annexing Britain though.....

Well: short answer is war exhaustion.

Once it reaches 100 in ennemy countries, you can take almost everything your want, without neville.

Of course, it takes quite a long time to reach 100 WE, and of course, yours will skyrocket too... I would advice 2 strategies:

1. Wargenious-strategy: encircle, attack, retreat and attack with 2nd army to maximize ennemy losses, and minimize yours. IIRC killing a million drives the score up by 20-30 at once.

2. Sucker-strategy. Wait until target country gets involved into a big war (crimwar for an example); DoW once the WE past 50; half job done...

Yes, the peace AI is terrible. Neville is your friend, and even then you might have to go further.

Go further? How about unintelligible. I was UK in a colonial war with Germany to kick them out of Zanzibar. To force peace I invaded a few Pacific Islands, PNG, all their West African colonies. I then offer peace asking for a few territories - they refuse, OK, wait a month offer again and ask for one territory - they refuse. My war exhaustion is going up so I offer a white peace and they refuse. Then 2 weeks later Germany asks for peace and offers me all their African colonies, all their Pacific islands, Iceland and Greenland!!!!! excuse my french but WHAT THE F...!!!!!!

I know, I know...

By further, I mean post war neville enforced province "trading", loading the game as the nation in question (useful for breaking up empires when it would be unachievable within the game's narrow confines), or even save game editing. Some times, it is necessary. I only go this route in the event of total victory, of course. Most of the time, I just endure the idiocy like everyone else.

AI goes really weird later in the game- dunno why.

Example- Fight the US around 1840, they will fold like superman, despite the ability to put up a reasonable defence.

Come to 1860s Ive occuppied whole US, 100% US war exhaustion, destroyed all their armies...they wont accept a peace where I give them stuff!!

For some reason in colonial wars you must pretty much occupy all of the enemy's colonies to be able to dictate a peace yourself. Once you have 100 % war score, you can ask for pretty much anything, but less than that they might even turn down a white peace. Once the AI realize they will lose the war, they usually offer you very good peace deals.

Btw, how could you get Iceland and Greenland in a colonial war? They're not colonies...

Are you sure? I just finished a game as the Netherlands where Germany kept declaring colonial war on me until I finally got ticked off enough to lay waste to all their colonies, including Iceland and Greenland.

However, this game was with VIP, so I don't know if things are laid out different or not.

Can't look right now. Supposed to be working. ;)

Well, I haven't actually checked myself, but since they're (well, at least Iceland) located in Europe, they shouldn't have colonial status. Unless, they start out as colonies for Denmark and neither Denmark nor Germany grants them statehood. Might fire up a game to check it out.
