Interesting. Even though this one looks like it will be for the mobile/Switch/whatever version, I think it would be a great improvement for the base game if a new political system were added. Internal politics is boring right now, so I hope a political/leader rework is coming in the future.

this might be a sequel or prequel? it looks too new to be just 3.0 stellaris...but why announce this early? it's only been a year since the huge 2.x rework and dlc's

everyone says it's for mobile, but what if it's a browser game :p

There's absolutely no way it's a sequel, and considering that Stellaris lacks a narrative I'm not sure how a prequel would work.

No, logically it's probably just a port.

It's not a port. It's been pretty clear from the images that it differs significantly.

This is a redesign of Stellaris. Streamline some aspects, expand others, chop out or add some bits. A strictly mobile port of stellaris would be kinda shitty, probably have horrible lag, and it wouldn't be the right sort of game to play on the go. So they are making a new game, using the core idea of stellaris as the base.

I think we need to decide on a fan-official name for the new game, since it IS a new game. I propose Stellegis. (stellaris + leg)

Regardless, my main point was just that their supposition that it's a sequel or prequel doesn't really make sense.

People are getting crazy ideas just by seeing some words.
"Cabinet" doesn't have to mean anything else than "the group of leaders who provide bonuses".
"Tax" doesn't have to mean a proper gameplay feature. It could just be the revenues you get every turn.
And so on.

It's very likely a mobile game, folks. It won't have deeper gameplay than PC or Console Stellaris. It will just have shiny, purely consmetic names. The only gameplay we've seen are some events that influence your ethics. We can also see that there will be money, ships, research, trade caravans, colonization and pops. But all this will likely be at a very basic level.

It doesn't mean that the game will not be unenjoyable, but ti's still way too similar to "regular" Stellaris for my taste. It looks like a strategy game for mobile, and no matter how I think about it, it's a bad idea. There's a reason why the genre isn't very popular on mobile. Well multiple reasons in fact.
And anyway I just don't see why I would play a mobile version of the game, even if it has some differences, if overall it's just a lesser adaptation of the game. I hope there's some interaction between the app and the game on PC because that's probably the thing that would make sense here. Otherwise I just don't see why they would tease people who already own the game with that announcement.

People always loved doomsday...
Since every years we have world end annonces every year...
Even if we're all supposed to be dead the 21th december of 2012 but details...

I feel like MOOII got its crisis right. The slow build of the Antarans made them not just a legitimate threat but also a part of the entire game's narrative. From the very beginning you weren't just building an empire to stick it to the neighbors, you were racing against an implacable threat.

I've always wanted Stellaris to rebuild its crisis along that model. Sometimes an event fires during the early game that gives you a hint at what's coming, but otherwise the crisis isn't a part of the game until it suddenly is. That's not an antagonist, that's a natural disaster.

If the threat of the crisis loomed over the entire game in some significant way, it would make that event far more interesting. It would turn it from a random catastrophe to the end of a narrative cycle. What's more, it would place the rest of the game in context. All the border skirmishes, trading, alliances, etc. would take place in the context of this enormous threat, as opposed to right now where that all largely takes place in the context of painting the map a different color.

Given that not long ago people were complaining quite vocally about the lack of a preset storyline within Stellaris, I assume this is a separate strategy/adventure game featuring some of the premade races and factions.

If it's an adventure/narrative/exploration/etc. spin-off, I would certainly be interested, especially if it came on the Nintendo Switch, but a simplified strategy game on mobile, not so much.

Yeah... hard pass on a mobile version.

I'm curious who their intended audience would be. Paradox players don't generally seem like people who would want (at all) a stripped down app-version of their favorite games. But maybe that's the whole point? Open a new market and reach people who ordinarily wouldn't come near a traditional Paradox title?

Stella is latin(esque), so it would be "star read" or "star reading".

That is my main criticism against the crises at this point : they don't feel like anything but a natural disaster. Vanilla crises (so, not The End or the Marauders) just sort of spawn and start wrecking shit. There's not much more to them, except a few gimmicky things like the Scourge queen or Contingency hubs. They just feel very arbitrary and not very interesting. In a way I would say the only really interesting crisis, to me, are the Marauders, as they reshape the map in interesting ways and aren't just big scary fleets that kill stuff.

Fighting the Reapers as commander Shepard is fun. Fighting them as councilor Udina, less so.

Good thing they can be disabled at least.

The Ur-Quan in Star Control just sort of 'showed up' and started wrecking shit. The buggers in Ender's Game just sort of 'showed up'. In Starcraft the Zerg just sort of 'showed up'.

What's wrong is that I don't find that interesting at all, and Stellaris is already too much geared towards combat and expansion.
But then again, to each their own, etc. There's nothing inherently wrong with crises, and they very much fill the role Paradox intended for them. I just, personally, find them to be incredibly boring.

Also, I do not feel like the Ender's Game reference is very useful there. Take the Reapers in Mass Effect. Before they appear they have a sense of mystery and dread around them. After they appear? They aren't very interesting. A story with the Reapers vs a completely homogeneous Hive Mind would be pretty boring. What is interesting is how people react to them, how the different races try (and sometimes fail at) to unite against a common threat, how they try to come up with a plan against an overwhelming invader, about the personal struggles and feelings of those who are involved in this war, about how this massive conflict will change the galactic society for ever (these last points are especially true for Ender's Game)...many things Stellaris, by design, isn't good at emulating.

But in the end the nice thing with Stellaris is how modular the experience can be, so I'm pretty happy with the crises being a thing, despite not liking it. Everyone can get what they want out of the game.

Interesting. Even though this one looks like it will be for the mobile/Switch/whatever version, I think it would be a great improvement for the base game if a new political system were added. Internal politics is boring right now, so I hope a political/leader rework is coming in the future.

Pretty sure the PDXCON for stellaris will be a Do you guys not have phones? rememe with major announcement for the mobile version and crumbs for the pc version.

@Isilanka good call. One of the main things missing in Stellaris is overarching narrative for the galaxy.

This applies to the marauders, war in heaven and end game crisis. They all lack buildup or sense of impending doom. They just happen.

The marauders should be actively seeking their new Khan from the start. The war in heaven should be represented and driven by a crisis meter (Ala HOI) that is influenced by galactic events. And as you said, the crisis should be the sword of damocles hanging over the entire galaxy. Anomalies could give clues to previous incursions by extra galactic's or alternate dimensions in the past, and hint at their future return.

If enough variations or combinations of things could happen, you could have a different narrative each game. Khans, fallen mpires, and random end game crises all with different agendas.
