PC Crashes after a few minutes

I have only got as far as some of the tutorial. After about 5-10 mins it completely crashes my PC and I need to reboot. I run lots of other games and software and have had no crashes for months. I have run DXDIAG and have enclosed the result.

I have reviewed the sticky on common problems but could not see anything that helped. I could only find one other thread which looked like the same issue but that did not have any resolution.

Hope someone can help.

Please report the temperatures of your CPU and video (GPU) 1/ before starting the game up and 2/ after say 10 minutes' play. If your PC's vendor has given you no way of reading temperatures, Google for and install SPEEDFAN or GPU-Z.

Have upgraded the graphics drivers as suggested and still have the same problem.

I will get the software to check the temperature before launching the game. I cannot do the same after 10 mins as it crashes the PC before that. Out of interest what is the logic behind this. Is CK2 more sensitive to temperature than any other games or software I run ?

Yes. It pushes the GPU very hard, as it uses it for calculations as well as graphics.

I picked 10 minutes because you said 5-10 in your OP. Just do it before loading the game, then again as soon before crashing as you can (hard I know).

I am not going to be able to do that. I Googled and downloaded SPEEDFAN from a site which Norton said was trusted. It was malware !!! It installed 2 extra applications, changed my homepage and default search. Norton also recommends blocked two security threats. It also does not want to uninstall. I am going to have to scan everything and hopefully fix anything else it has done.

The site Denniss linked is the right one. I can't speak for Norton's recommendations, but I've had literally hundreds of people use that utility with no problem at all.

I came to this site for help, not abuse from some arrogant obnoxious half wit who needs to hone his Google skills looking up Absolute Basics of Customer Service or Courtesy for Complete Dummies.

I have spent a couple of hours sorting out issues resulting specifically from following the instructions provided by your colleague and am not in the mood to be insulted for doing so.

You may have the option to play around with whatever toy AV program you like. I use this PC for business as well as play. I work for one of the largest Risk Management companies in the world. They standardize on Norton for much of their IT security environment because people who I am sure have vastly more knowledge and experience than you view it as one of the few robust, enterprise level solutions with the support and service structures needed by a global corporation. I cannot dump it or even change a lot of the configuration.

I don't use Google much but did prefer the direct site which you have given the link to. They use a strange download process and as their site explains that may conflict with other software and fail. It did fail and I had to look elsewhere.

I have bought most Paradox strategy games over a number of years and always been happy with the games and the level of service, but this is not the kind of support I had come to expect.

As far as your game problem goes, once you have things sorted out use either of those apps - maybe gpu-z in the circumstances - to give us the temperature readings, as your problem does seem like overheating.

As you suspect the game is causing severe overheating. Before launching the game the temperature was 45 (after a couple of hours of use including some applications which would use graphics). After launching the game for about 2-3 mins I checked and the temperature had gone to 71 !!! At that point I came out as that does not sound like it would be good for the PC. After coming out the temperature is gradually falling off again.

By the way those readings are for the Intel GPU not the NVidia. I could check that as well but am assuming there is no point if the Intel is already overheating.

That is a little odd as you really want to be using the nVidia for the game. Here are the general instructions for doing that

71c is on the high side, but not extreme - I've seen machine running over 90c. However it's clearly causing a problem in this situation so let's see what can be done.

First check your CK2 settings.txt and make sure the refreshRate is not over, say, 72. If it is revert it to 60, that's plenty. If that bears no fruit, get fraps and see what frame rate you are running at - again if it's over about 72 use fraps to force it down to 60, that will help keep the GPU cool.

I have followed those suggestions (set to use nvidia card and made sure refresh to 60 and FPS to 60). Unfortunately the game still crashes the PC although it felt like it may be a little longer before it did so.

Is the nVidia overheating also? You may actually have a fan or heatsink problem if so. The legit Speedfan allows you to crank your fans up, so you might try doing that. Or simply take it to a PC shop and have them check over the heat dissipation systems.

The nvidia gets to about 70 or so as well but I am not sure that is the problem as I have checked and with other games the nvidia also gets to that temperature and no crash. I took it along to my PC shop yesterday and they could not find anything wrong with the heat dissipation. I have also tried using a support with a cooling fan but it still crashes.

I have however found one other game which causes exactly the same problem. I have just installed EU4 from steam and with that my PC crashed after 10 minutes.

I'm confident from that you have a heat or hardware fault, almost certainly in the video card area. PDS games push the video card harder than almost any other game of its era. Not because of detailed graphics or high resolutions, but because it offloads as much work as possible onto the video processor, to free up the main CPU to deal with the vast amount of data the game uses to model history.

Looks like I have hit a roadblock with this. I have been in to my computer shop again. They cleaned the fan and checked again but say that they cannot find anything wrong with the graphics or the heat dissipation. I still have the problem. I don't rhink it can be the graphics card itself as I get the same problem with the Intel and the Nvidia.

I really appreciate you spending so much effort to help but as no-one else has the issue it seems to be a problem unique to my system. In that case there is not really any more I can expect you to do. I will just have to be patient and wait until I get back to main home in a few months and can get these running on one of my other computers.
