Just top be sure, here's what I mean by a full clean re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "delete local content" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete all files and folders left under Steam/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.

You need to be 100% sure that ALL files from BOTH those locations are gone, before installing again.

Yep, all files in Steam/CK2 and Documents/Paradox/CK2 were removed, as well as the folders themselves. Steam Verify detects nothing wrong with the install. VC++ and DirX are both up to date. Running CK2game.exe as administrator. Tried clean install of 2.2.1 once more to see if the computer gods were benevolent. They were not. I documented the process if you would like evidence.

I don't see how that's possible; a clean re-install will set the game back to exactly how it was before you did your modding. If it worked then I don't see why it wouldn't work now - if nothing else has changed.

What exactly does "fails to load" mean? At what stage, does what happen?

If you exit Steam and run ck2game.exe directly, any different?

I found the solution: patience. Although it hangs during the load and gives me the "... has stopped responding" dialogue, it seems that if I leave it for a minute or so the program works fine. Though it's strange that Windows just recently decided that the program was hanging up, I've never seen the game 'freeze' while loading before... but I guess it works?

Thanks for your time.
