[pc] CKII does not work on my desktop (already tried suggested workaround)

I play CKII mostly on my laptop (with steam) but when i try to load it on my desktop it just refuses to work. The DLC selector comes up, but when choosing to play, the screen goes black, emits a burst of the main theme, and then reports that "CK2 has stopped working". Already tried the 640x480 trick suggested in the sticky. Any thoughts?

please post a dxdiag.txt (you can delete everything after the "Sound devices" section for brevity), settings.txt, system.log and error.log files (you'll need to rename the .log files to .txt to upload). Also open setup.log, search for "checksum", and paste that line only in here.

I can't find any of these files. Whereish are they on a steam install?

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then post the first part of that file here.

Settings.txt is in the MyDocuments/paradox/ck2 folder, and the others in /logs/ under that.

Here they are. I cannot find Settings.txt in my CKII folder, all I see are the logs folder and dlc_signature

I would guess something failed during the install, but I have "removed local data" and tried again from steam several times

This video driver is nearly 2 years more recent than the one you have http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/44967 , give that a try

Next potential issue is this:

The game's minimum resolution is 1024x768 at 50hz. Try the '640x480' resolution in the sticky thread above titled "known issues", if that doesn't help try setting your machine's desktop setting to at least that resolution.

Hi! I have very similar problem, I get the DLC/mod startup, but cant run the game itself. I just got a geforce gtx 560 graphics card, a weeks ago. The game ran without problems with the same screen previously with a geforce 9800 gt card. So now I have better graphics card, but it doesnt work. Other games Starcraft 2/skyrim works well.

I have tried to run the game in 640X480 without success, however, I cant seem to lower the desktop graphics past 600x 800 (but when on that resoulution I still cant run the game).
Local game files have been validated in steam.
Attachments below. Setup.log and error.log was at 0kb

I have the latest drivers as far as i can see
EDIT: Dix diag
EDIT2: It seems that the game runs fine when using the Game of thrones mod, but not when running without it

Try renaming that settings.txt and let it create a new one.

BTW the 640x480 fix does NOT involve changing the desktop or game resolution to 640x480. As it says in the Known Issues thread:

Right click steamapps/common/crusader kings 2/ck2.exe, set compatibility to run in 640 X 480, then start from this .exe. Adjust your resolution through the in-game options and exit the game. Remove the check from 640 X 480 box and start the game from steam library.

Renaming the settings.txt solved it! Hurray :laugh: Thanks a lot!
(yea I did change the compatibilty of the exe file previously, I just misread your post)
Oh, and sorry to tormos for hogging the thread, guess I had a different issue after all :unsure:

none of these fixes work. As I said, it's like it's not installing/downloading correctly, but i have deleted local content and re downloaded several times.
